MINI Convertible Oregon

Summer is on the way, and MINI's Convertible is getting hotter! This is the all-new drop-top, which has received a host of improvements. The most significant benefits are in the form of the engines – there's a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre unit for the Cooper, while the Cooper S tried here adds a turbo.

Summer is on the way, and MINI’s Convertible is getting hotter! This is the all-new drop-top, which has received a host of improvements.

The most significant benefits are in the form of the engines – there’s a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre unit for the Cooper, while the Cooper S tried here adds a turbo. This model isn’t as pricey as the hot John Cooper Works version, but it still offers storming pace. So is it the best model in the range?

Well, while the Cooper feels a little underpowered, the Cooper S offers an excellent blend of performance and practicality. The handling is tight and precise, with superb steering and very little body roll.

But the 175bhp engine is the highlight. It delivers willing performance, with plenty of torque low down in the rev range. What’s more, 44mpg fuel economy and emissions of 153g/km are impressive, too.

Behind the wheel, there’s the usual array of retro instruments, and build quality is good. The electric roof folds in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 35mph, while the targa-style centrepiece can be opened or closed as a sunroof at up to 75mph.

All MINIs benefit from BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme, which includes stop-start technology. This boosts fuel economy by around 10mpg compared to the previous model. Weight is down by 10kg, while boot space is increased by five litres whether the roof is up or down. Structural rigidity is also up by 10 per cent to boost safety and handling, and MINI’s hill start system is standard.

With the best residuals on the market, the Convertible is a brilliant buy – and this Cooper S is the pick of the range.
