You have been dating or courting for months and all of a sudden, he or she has to leave or is being transferred. How do you keep the flame from burning out? Understanding and communication are the key words. Below are some tips to follow.
STEP 1:
Call regularly without being overbearing. Keeping in touch with each other is very important so that the relationship won't fade out. Communication is a vital key to nurturing a long distance relationship. While calling, make sure you consider time differences. If your partner is taking a nap after working all night, etc., you can send a message ahead that you will be calling at a particular time so that he or she will be prepared to speak with you. Calling twice a day is okay, as long as your partner agrees to it.
STEP 2:
Always discuss the highlights of your day. Sharing the highlights of your day will mean a lot to your partner. This way, you are telling your partner that he/she is very important to you. It makes the both of you look forward to each other's call.
STEP 3:
Don't keep secrets from each other. Some people advise that you should not tell your partner your secrets. Well, I am against that. You might not be able to say everything but make sure you tell him or her a lot to avoid any future repercussions. Don't think your secrets are not important. Someone would prefer to hear something about your past from you rather than from another source.
STEP 4:
Enjoy yourself and do new things so that you don't miss your spouse too much. Have fun! Do things that you have not done in a long while like a massage, join a club, do community work, meet new people, watch comedy, and attend shows. These new things or activities are not to replace the moments you have with your partner on the phone.
STEP 5:
Make use of other means of communication, e.g. the postal service and the Internet. This will bring variety into the way you communicate with each other. Send roses to her. Come on! You don't have to wait until Valentine's Day to surprise and delight your partner. Send him his favorite perfume or aftershave, with a note of how you miss that smell on him/her.
STEP 6:
Try unwinding by opening the 'box' of treasured moments you have both had. Yes! This can be refreshing at times and bring smiles to a tired face. Remember your first date, your first kiss, the day you embarrassed yourself while he was with you. The day you proposed to her, the day you had your first baby, the day she gave you a massage, the funny things you have done together...all these are treasured memories that help to cement the bond between you. Remember, nurturing a long distance relationship takes a lot and you have to be open-minded and faithful towards your partner. Do your best and make sure the relationship does not end up being one-sided because of the distance between you two. Invest in it and your long distance relationship can survive and even thrive!
