The Groton Business Association (GBA) of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Holiday Lights Parade in December at 5pm. The GBA, the Town of Groton and the City of Groton invite you to participate in this special annual holiday event.The GBA welcomes floats from businesses, clubs, and organizations and marchers from all groups in the community. A special call goes out to bands and choral groups who make that special holiday music that everyone knows and loves. Trophies will be awarded to parade participants. Judging will be held at 4 p.m. prior to the start of the parade. Tune into Q105 for holiday music from 4:30 - 6:30. After the parade, Santa Claus will have the honor of lighting up the holiday tree on the green at the rear of the Groton Shopping Plaza. Keep in the generous spirit of holiday and bring hats, mittens and scarfs for those in need. Donations can be dropped off at the tree after the parade. The Parade Committee is looking for donations, sponsors for awards and volunteers for the night of the parade. Groton's Holiday Lights Parade is sponsored by the Groton Business Association (GBA) of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and Holiday Lights Parade Sponsors. This town-wide event is to promote businesses in Groton and create a greater sense of community among all Groton residents. Any net proceeds from the festival will be used to support GBA events and projects throughout the year. At this year¡¯s Groton Lights Parade, the staff of Liberty Tax Service in Mystic and Groton, dressed as Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty, will be collecting used cell phones for Cell Phones for Soldiers, a registered non-profit organization in Norwell, Mass., to exchange for pre-paid calling cards for our soldiers deployed overseas to call their loved ones. Additionally, you can drop off your old cell phone at Liberty¡¯s Groton office¡ªlocated several stores down from the Big Y market¡ªat the Groton Shoppers Mart. The LCWP at UConn Torrington examines the definitions, protection and abuse of human rights in the fall 2009 series: Justice, Injustice and Human Rights. Taking part will be award-winning film and television director, Joyce Chopra and playwright, Bill C. Davis. Davis' play, "Avow," was hailed by The New York Times as, "timely and provocative," and tells the story of Brian and Tom who are Catholic and want to be married in the church. The documentary film, "Gramercy Stories" directed by Chopra, will also be screened as part of the evening. Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm Free and open to the public.
