However, thefirst "E-Class" didn't appear until the mid-1980s when the letter "E"was added to the model designation (in German it meant Einspritzung,or fuel injection). The current generation E-Class was introduced in 2003, offered in both sedan and wagonbody styles that are available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. Avariety of engine choices are offered, including 6- and 8-cylindergasoline and 6-cylinder diesel models. The standard gasoline model isthe E350 (EPA fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg city, and 24 mpghighway) while the E320 Bluetec is the diesel-powered E-Class (23 mpgcity and 32 mpg highway). Less frugal, but more enthusiast-oriented,are the E550 and powerful E63 AMG models. In our 2008 Initial QualityStudy (IQS), which measures new-vehicle quality at 90 days, the E-Classtied for the No. 1 ranking in its segment. The E-Class also rankedamong the top three models in our 2008 Automotive Performance,Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to spotlight those modelswhose owners were delighted with the design, content, layout andperformance of their automobiles.
