2009Mercedes-Benz E-ClassMercedes-Benzhas been making midsize sedans for more than fifty years. However, thefirst "E-Class" didn't appear until the mid-1980s when the letter "E"was added to the model designation (in German it meant Einspritzung,or fuel injection). The current generation E-Class was introduced in 2003, offered in both sedan and wagonbody styles that are available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. Avariety of engine choices are offered, including 6- and 8-cylindergasoline and 6-cylinder diesel models. The standard gasoline model isthe E350 (EPA fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg city, and 24 mpghighway) while the E320 Bluetec is the diesel-powered E-Class (23 mpgcity and 32 mpg highway). Less frugal, but more enthusiast-oriented,are the E550 and powerful E63 AMG models. In our 2008 Initial QualityStudy (IQS), which measures new-vehicle quality at 90 days, the E-Classtied for the No. 1 ranking in its segment.
