Number 1: Clean Diesels
Clean diesel engines burning low-sulfur fuel are coming, in fact, a few are already here (Mercedes-Benz Bluetec). And so far, the verdict has been positive, perhaps because the technology delivers significant performance, longevity and fuel economy gains. Now all automakers have to do is convince oil companies to make more diesel fuel and put it in a few more locations...and diesel may turn into a granola-eater's best friend, especially if someone combines "diesel" with "hybrid" and gets the best of both worlds.
Earth Day 2009 prediction: "Clean diesel" will be trendy, more available and more understood.
