(NC)-Today's multi-channel universe presents an increasing number of choices for parents looking for quality shows for younger children. Determining what's age appropriate, what's educational, and, let's not forget, what's entertaining, is challenging for today's busy parents. But help is on the way. According to children's entertainment consultant Eve Hall, there are a number of things parents can look for when seeking out quality TV shows for younger children.

Ms. Hall has spent 20 years developing television for children and families, most recently with Playhouse Disney, the newly launched offshoot of Family Channel, which is available in Canada through many cable and satellite providers. The programs on Playhouse Disney (www.playhousedisney.ca) are designed to be educational and entertaining. On any given broadcast day children can be introduced to classical music and works of art (Little Einsteins), learn about different cultures of the world (Franny's Feet) and solve puzzles and problems with the help of Mickey Mouse (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse).

In addition to working with Playhouse Disney, Ms. Hall has a master's degree in Education from Harvard and a client list that includes Scholastic, Sesame Street and PBS. Her life's work consists of numerous research projects, including studies of preschool mothers and children, Gen X and Boomer parents, and children's use of media. Armed with these credentials, she has compiled a list of five questions for parents to help shape quality TV time for their children.

When deciding whether a program is right for your child, Ms. Hall suggests that parents take the following questions into consideration. But remember, the best way to determine if a show is appropriate is to watch along with your child.

1. Is it learning focused?

Learning-focused shows inspire children to learn more about themselves, others and the world around them. These educational shows teach social skills, self expression, thinking skills, motor skills, even early academics.

2. Is it entertaining?

It might sound obvious but children will be more likely to learn if they are laughing and having fun. Look for compelling characters, music, comedy, and visuals that stimulate a child's imagination and hold their attention.

3. Is it engaging/interactive?

Engaging and interactive programs make sure children get excited so they want to fully connect, be it mentally, physically or verbally. This programming also helps children retain what they've learned.

4. Are the characters compelling?

There's no recipe for creating lovable, memorable characters that children will identify with, who will inspire them to think new thoughts and do new things. But parents will know that their child has connected when they start emulating the qualities of their favourite characters.

5. Is it appealing to me as a parent?

Last but not least, let's not forget that parents will have to sit through the shows too. Good ones will be entertaining enough for parents to want to co-view with their children. The best ones will motivate them to extend the learning after the TV is turned off.
