Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport is known by the letters EWR. It is an airport that is within the city limits of two different towns in New Jersey. These two towns are Newark and Elizabeth. The airport is located about 15 miles away from Manhattan, New York. Therefore, much of the air traffic in and out of the airport is for New York City. Newark is actually considered to be one of the New York airports, as it is just as important to the city as their other airports are.

1. Getting There

The Newark Liberty International Airport is a very important airport on the East Coast of the United States. Therefore, a lot of work has gone into making the airport easy to access. The airport is an Intermodal Airport; this means that the airport is connected to several other places with a monorail system. This system is called the AirTrain Network.

The monorail system is crucial to transportation in and out of the Newark Airport. It connects all of the terminals in the airport with several main stations located outside of the airport. The station in the airport is called the Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Link Station. From this station, one can get on an Amtrak train. Therefore, one can go anywhere that Amtrak travels from Newark Liberty. Also, one can get to this station via any other Amtrak station in the United States. The Rail Link Station is also connected to the New Jersey Transit Service. Therefore, one can move between the airport station and any of several other stations along those routes. These routes include busses, trains, and shuttles. This service stops at many stations. These stations include Penn Station in New York City, and other stations along the New Jersey coastline.

When a passenger wishes to use this monorail system, they will be able to travel for free between all of the stations. However, if they wish to leave the station, or enter a Rail Link Station from another area, they will need to pay a $5.50 fee. Therefore, if a person can get to a Rail Link Station, they only need to spend $5.50 to get to the airport. Also, if they wish to use the Rail Link Station to get home from the airport, they can do this for $5.50 as well.

One can also use a bus to get to the airport. Busses run between the airport and several destinations in New Jersey and New York City. These busses will cost between $14 and $26 for a round trip ticket. However, these busses are intended simply for the airport. One might also catch a local city bus that stops at the airport. There are several of these local busses, and for these, the fee is only $1.35. Finally, if a person wishes to drive to the airport, they can get there using the New Jersey Turnpike. There are two exits from the turnpike to the airport. These two exits are 13A and 14.

2. Airport History and Today

The airport has been its current size since the 1970s. Before that, it was much smaller and not nearly as important. However, during the decade of the 1970s, there was significant construction. The airport was also enlarged. It was during this time that two of the main terminals were created. These were terminals A and B. During these years, the airport was named Newark Liberty International Airport. Before this time, it was simply called Newark Airport.

The last of the main terminals, terminal C, was not finished until 1988. During the construction period, the airport was not used very much. However, after Terminal C was completed, the airport's usage expanded dramatically. A company called People Express began to use the airport in the early 1980s, and continued to for many years. Also, around this same time, Virgin Atlantic Airways started to have flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to London. This led to Newark's airport becoming almost as important as JFK in New York City. When People Express merged into the airline Continental, Newark Liberty International Airport became the hub for this airline.

Today, the airport is operated by the same group that operates the other two main airports in the area, JFK International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport. This is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Newark Liberty International Airport is the 10th busiest airport in all of the United States. It is also the 5th busiest international airport in the country. There were 36 million passengers that traveled through the airport in 2006.

Terminal C was the final terminal completed. It has two ticketing levels. One of these is for international check-ins, and the other is for domestic flights. Terminal C also has a mezzanine level between these floors. This is the level where food, shops, and gates are located.

Each of the three terminals is also divided into concourses that are numbered. In Terminal A, one will find concourses A1, A2, and onward. In Terminal B, one will find B1 and onward. And in Terminal C, the concourses are numbered C1 and onward. The airport itself is located on 2,027 acres. There are three runways, and there is also one helipad for helicopter traffic.

The airport offers assistance to elderly passengers, those with disabilities, and those that need help for any other reason. This assistance is usually offered through small carts that are driven by employees.
