2 . Nursing Degrees - Types

Nursing Degrees - Types The different types of nursing degrees include Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LPN or LVN); Registered Nurse (RN); and Nurse Practitioner. Either of the different types of nursing degrees can prove to provide an individual with outstanding career options in the medical field. Further, an individual that earns a nursing degree will find that they have embarked on a life changing career. An LPN takes a nursing class that lasts about one year and involves both classroom and clinical components. LPN licensing varies from state to state, with each state having different requirements. Since LPNs must work under the supervision of registered nurses, their job opportunities are somewhat limited. Most LPNs work in long-term nursing care. The demand for LPNs is not growing at the same rate as the demand for more highly trained nurses. In fact, in some areas, the demand for LPNs is declining.

There are three types of RNs. Nurses with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) have completed a four-year college course. Nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) have usually completed a 2-3 year program at a community or junior college. More rarely, a nurse may attend a 3-year diploma program administered by a hospital. RNs must also pass a national test, the NCLEX-RN. Because of the national licensing exam, it is easier for RNs to get licensed in multiple states than it is for LPNs. There is currently a heavy demand for RNs.

Another type of nurse is the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has completed additional studies. A nurse practitioner can work without the direct supervision of a physician. Nurse practitioners typically diagnose and treat minor illnesses and injuries, referring the more serious or complex cases to a physician. In some states, nurse practitioners are even allowed to write prescriptions.

3 . What It Takes To Be a Nurse in Mishawaka

What It Takes To Be a Nurse in Mishawaka There is no single nursing personality. Caring and intelligent individuals can easily take on the task of obtaining a nursing degree to enter into the medical profession. However, there are a few traits that most good nurses possess. In general, a nurse must possess the ability to read and understand information and work out simple mathematic equations. A nurse must also commit to being a lifelong learner, since the state of medical knowledge changes almost daily. What was state of the art two years ago may be passé today.

Of course nurses need to be able to interact effectively with people. Therefore, good communication skills and empathy are important. It is also important for the nurse to be tolerant of those different from her or himself.

Flexibility is also a vital part of nursing. Nurses need to be able to think quickly and respond to situations as they change and unfold. Of course some nursing jobs offer more routine and stability than others. But even a job working at a doctor’s office in Mishawaka is not always routine. A patient may come in stable and suddenly decompensate, or a patient may unexpectedly require extra time and attention.

Leadership ability is also an important quality for a nurse to possess. A nurse may need to take control of a situation where a patient or family member is upset and acting out. Even in daily work, a nurse often supervises other health care professionals such as technicians and certified nurse’s aides. The nurse’s leadership can make the difference between a calm, well-organized work environment and a chaotic one.

Most nurses also have a sense of humor—and often that humor is gallows humor. Although a good nurse would never laugh at his or her patient, laughing at oneself or at an impossibly difficult situation is healthy and normal.

4 . Entrance Exams in Mishawaka

Entrance Exams in Mishawaka Almost every nursing school requires an entrance exam. These exams highlight the best candidates and weed out the worst. Also, nursing degree entrance exams will help the university determine where the student should start in terms of proper study. This is not an exam that you pass or fail (although a minimum percentage of correct answers is usually necessary for you even to be considered as a nursing student candidate). Rather, your grade will be compared to the grades of other men and women vying to get into the nursing school. For instance, if a school in Mishawaka has forty slots, the forty students with the highest scores on the entrance exam will be admitted.

Schools may use several different tests. A few of the more popular ones include the Nursing Entrance Test (NET), Registered Nurse Entrance Exam (RNEE), Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), Psychological Services Bureau (PSB), Critical Thinking Entrance Exam (CTEE) and Diagnostic Entrance Test (DET). Some of these tests are designed to determine whether or not you know basic facts. Others measure your ability to learn new things.

Subjects commonly covered by nursing entrance exams include math, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and sometimes basic scientific information such as biology and chemistry. If you are applying for an RN program, you may also be asked to demonstrate a basic knowledge of anatomy and physics. Some tests also measure your stress level, ability to interact in social situations and your preferred learning style.

For those who don’t test well or fear their skills are rusty, practice tests and brush-up classes can be found on many internet sites. There are also several books that give advice about taking nursing entrance exams, and community colleges may offer classes to help would-be students prepare.
