The modern plumber is far more than the person who shows up to fix leaks or find out why your hot water heater is not delivering hot water. 3 . How They Are Trained And Licensed in Massachusetts

Each state has different requirements for plumber training and licensing. Some require formal education through a technical facility or a union apprentice program. Some require that they have a license to be considered a master plumber. Some require that they work as journeymen under the license of a master plumber. Some states have absurdly little training and licensing requirements.

There are plumbing associations that provide excellent training for new apprentices, as well as advanced training for plumbers looking to add to their technical knowledge. Manufacturers, like boiler manufacturers, offer classes that are very technical, as this equipment takes specific knowledge to install and set up properly and safely. These classes are very involved and include setting up the computer boards that come with some of these more advanced boilers. These advances are in place to try to gain as much efficiency as possible from these new age boilers.

4 . Is There Room For Advancement

A knowledgeable plumber with several years of quality experience can become a highly paid employee of a plumbing company in Massachusetts. This same individual can advance to job foreman or even a partner or owner of the company. If ownership and being the boss is important, an experienced plumber can start their own company in Massachusetts.

Schools and training facilities around Massachusetts need experienced trainers and teachers. Supply houses and manufacturers are also on the lookout for these same plumbers. Real time experience is invaluable for all these advanced positions. Real job problem solving is hard to come by unless the person has actually done this work. Book learning alone is not enough for these advanced positions. It takes both to be able to perform at this level.

The bottom line in this profession is that an individual can go as far as they want, if they are willing to pay the price and learn the job. A person can start at the bottom as an apprentice and with hard work; training, and experience, rise to run a plumbing company with many customers dependent upon them. It is a profession with no ceiling upon those willing to work at it. This cannot be said of all potential jobs a person could go into.
