2. Urban Law Enforcement Positions For A Police Officer

There are urban or city law enforcement positions for a police officer that require patrolling city streets, specified neighborhoods, and special events. City cops seem to have more work because they work in the city where everyone lives and frequents. The nice thing about working in an urban area is that you can talk to the area residents and form a friendship. The community does have more events and attractions that officers have to patrol.

Many police departments will sponsor school programs that require the officers to participate in activities that teach children to say no to drugs. They also handle a variety of calls ranging from minor car accidents to murders. Officers respond to domestic violence calls and child abuse calls. They also respond to calls about animal safety or animals at large. Cops are not always respected, but they do form bonds with urban residents that make the job worth pursuing.

There are no special qualifications other than the standard training to become an urban law enforcement officer. Officers that work in the city will from time to time work with detectives and county sheriff deputies on cases that carry over into their districts. For the most part, being a city cop is rewarding and adventurous, while being a bit overwhelming at times depending on the location and size of the city.

3. Deputy Sheriff Law Enforcement Positions For A Police Officer

There are deputy sheriff law enforcement positions that require patrolling the county. In some cases, deputies will patrol and help the city cops when they are shorthanded or have a major disturbance. Many deputies work in secluded areas of the county. They patrol the roads and watch for accidents, speeding violators, and in many cases, injured animals.

Sheriff deputies spend some time educating rural school students about drugs and other criminal offenses. Deputies are sometimes out on the roads by themselves without a partner. There is little to no criminal activity in the county depending on the location. The job duties are the same as they are for an urban officer because the deputies do come into the city for assistance to help handle calls that relate to domestic violence murders, theft, accidents, and traffic control.

To become a sheriff deputy, you need to take the same training as a city cop, except many county officers also take advanced learning classes to become certified for diving in the case of a water related case. Some deputies will further their employment by running for the sheriff of the department. The sheriff is an elected individual that sets forth the standards for the deputies to follow. There are many more ways for deputies to advance than there are for urban police officers.

4. Detective Law Enforcement Positions For A Police Officer

Becoming a detective for a local police department usually requires that you start out as a police officer first and work your way up the ladder. You do need to know the area and people, as well as the activities that happen in the area. The only way a detective could learn such information is by patrolling the streets in which he or she works. A detective investigates criminal activities and cases that take more time to collect evidence and facts.

Many detectives go on to work in special forces such as undercover work relating to drugs, criminal activity, and sting operations. Some work with the bomb squad, or with other cops from different counties to uncover criminal activity. The detective usually wears street clothes or suits depending on the case and nature of the investigation. Some even wear disguises if required for a specific operation.

A career as a detective is just as rewarding as being a police officer, except you seem to reach different levels of criminal activity more so than a patrol officer. The salary is a little higher for a detective than it is for a patrol cop. Most police departments have a detective's bureau and a police bureau. There are higher education classes that you need to take to become a detective.
