Select an accountant with a professional designation who is ready to respond to your individual need. For example, certified general accountants (CGAs) merit the confidence and trust of all who rely upon their professional knowledge; skills, judgment and integrity, and they adhere to a strong code of ethics.

Select an accountant whose suggestions indicate an understanding of your business. Consider someone who listens and hears what you have to say, someone with whom you can develop a solid relationship with based on mutual trust.

In considering a candidate, question if the person:

• can offer you services that meet your needs.?

• can assist you on a short- or long-term basis.?

• is convenient to meet with.?

• is able to explain accounting in clear language that you can understand.?

Prepare some interview questions in advance of meet with the candidate:

1. Do you have prior work experience with my type of business?

2. Can you provide references of clients in similar businesses as to my own?

3. What is your standard billing procedure, and can you provide me with an estimate?

4. Who will do the routine work, yourself or other staff?

5. Are you open to seeking advice from outside experts on specialized business affairs?

Most importantly, take the time to be selective as the accountant you choose may become you most valuable resource.
