One of the most-loved appliances in the kitchen is also one of the most complex in the household. Whether it is for storing ice cream, keeping your favorite sashimi fresh, keeping leftover food from the last holiday or keeping fruits and vegetables crisp and fresh the modern household requires a refrigerator in the kitchen as the main appliance for food safety.

While we do know a refrigerator lights up when we open it, and that we can control its temperature, we know little enough about the complex devices completing the refrigeration cycle on and on to maintain its usefulness.

Refrigeration is (whether for industrial or commercial use), basically, making an enclosed space cold, and keeping it at that temperature. This happens when liquid is made to evaporate, with heat absorption happening at the same time. Without the heat, the space then becomes cooler, and the cold air in the evaporation process helps maintain that cold temperature. The cycle then repeats for continued operation.

A refrigerator has the following parts: an expansion valve, a compressor, refrigerant, heat-exchanging pipes, and other refrigeration devices.

Based on the previous explanation on how refrigeration works, basically, the purpose of these parts is to allow air flow within the system whether cold air, compressed air, or hot air.

Now, much like how other distribution parts work, a refrigeration device has its pros and cons, as explained below:

PROs

  • A refrigeration device maintains the supply of refrigerant gas to other sectors of the mechanism.
  • With its multi-pronged valves or passageways controlled by a central electromagnet, it dictates whether that certain valve should close or open the passageway at the same time that the core moves.
  • While the other parts determine the temperature of the air that needs to flow, a refrigeration device s crucial work is to correctly identify which air flows where .

CONs

  • A refrigeration device is costly. Because of the high pressure created by the refrigerant gases, large electromagnets, which are costly, are used.
  • Brought about by the use of large electromagnets, there is noise that is produced while the refrigeration devise is in use. Every time the refrigeration device is at work, the noise can be heard.
  • This noise can be eliminated or at least reduced by using direct current electromagnets. However, this would require electronic modules, which are also costly, and there have been questions on the probable functional and mechanical lapses because of the complexity of this new model.

With more studies currently ongoing, refrigeration devices and the different applications and improvements for other conditioning systems (like air-conditioning, cold storage, freezers, coolers) are looking better. With more and better technology to work with (e.g., ammonia), we will be presented with refrigeration that is more advanced and suitable for more needs and applications true to their purpose.

This technology has come a long way from its simple beginnings, and with more progress, refrigeration is able to take on industrial uses and large-scale enterprises.
