Clinical Application:
One study treated 106 patients of senile prostatic hyperplasia with Qian Lie Shu Wan (oral administration, one bolus each time, three times a day). Four weeks constituted one course of treatment. The results showed that after 1-2 courses of treatment, 23 patients were completely recovered, 34 patients significantly improved, 33 patients improved, and 16 patients did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 84.9%. In relieving the main symptoms of the disease, such as frequency of micturition and bradyuria, the treatment had an effective rate above 90%.(1),(2)

One study treated 30 cases each of prostatic hyperplasia and of chronic prostatitis (oral administration, one bolus each time, three times a day). A control group of 21 cases (8 cases of prostatic hyperplasia and 13 cases of prostatitis) orally took Qian Lie Kang, 3 tablets each time, three times a day. One course of treatment lasted a month for both groups. The results: after 1-2 courses of treatment, of the treatment and control groups, respectively, 17 and 2 cases were recovered, 20 and 4 significantly improved, 19 and 10 cases improved, and 4 and 5 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 93.3% and 76.2%.(3) Another study treated 238 cases of chronic prostatitis with this formula, and reported 58% of the patients were either resolved or significantly improved, and overall, the treatment was effective on 86.2% of the patients. Qian Lie Tong herbal bags were used to treat 70 cases of chronic prostatitis and 30 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. The bags contained Ding Xiang (Male Clove), Jiu Cai Zi (Chinese Chive Seed), She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit), Dang Gui (Dang Gui), Xi Xin (Wild Ginger), Feng Fang (Hornet Nest), etc. The bags were placed on the following acupoints: Shen Que (Ren 8), Qi Hai (Ren 6), Guan Yuan (Ren 4), Chong Ji (Ren 3), etc. The bags were changed once every 15 days. One month constituted one course of treatment. The results: the treatment achieved a total effective rate of 87%.(10)

Another study used Qian Lie Shu decoction in treating 47 cases of prostatic hyperplasia with retention-enema. The formula contained Huang Bo (Phellodendron), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Da Huang (Rhubarb), San Leng (Burreed Tuber), and E Zhu (Zedoaria). Once or twice a day, the patients were treated by retention-enema with 50ml of the decoction of the formula was heated to about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and 30 days constituted one course of treatment. The results: 18 cases significantly improved, 23 cases improved, and 6 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 87.2%.(12)

Acupuncture and ginger moxibustion were jointly used to treat 38 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. Patients with yang deficiency of the spleen and kidney and with bladder dysfunction in qi transformation received acupuncture treatment on Guan Yuan (Ren 4), Zu San Li (St 36), San Yin Jiao (Sp 6), Pang Guang Shu (UB 28), Shen Shu (UB 23), and Pi Shu (UB 20). The needles were vertically inserted into the acupoints and were retained while ginger moxibustion was applied (three moxa cones). Patients with yin deficiency of the liver and kidney and with downward flow of damp-heat into the bladder received acupuncture treatment on Zhong Ji (Ren 3), Tai Chong (Liv 3), San Yin Jiao (Sp 6), Pang Guang Shu (UB 28), Shen Shu (UB 23), and Gan Shu (UB 18). Using the reinforcing-reducing method, the acupuncture treatment was conducted daily, and 10 sessions constituted one course of treatment. The results: 10 cases recovered, 24 cases improved, and 4 cases did not respond to the treatment.(16)

Fresh-water turtle shell moxibustion was used to treat 65 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. A whole fresh-water turtle shell was washed clean, air-dried, and soaked in hydrochloric acid (1:1500) for an hour. Several cloves of garlic were spread out on acupoint Zhong Ji (Ren 3) and covered with the treated turtle shell. A 2mm-thick mugwort floss was placed on the shell, and ignited and burnt. Right after this treatment, the acupoint was palm-massaged for three minutes. The moxibustion was repeated 2 times a day, and one course of treatment lasted 10 days. The results: after one course of treatment, 35 cases significantly improved, 29 cases improved, and 1 case did not respond to the treatment.(17)
