Li Chong Tang was used to treat 32 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. The formula consisted of Huang Qi (Astragalus Roto), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), Dang Shen (Codonopsis), Bai Zhu (white Atractylodes), Shan Yao (Dioscorea), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena), San Leng (Burreed Tuber), E Zhu (Zedoaria), Ji Nei Jin (Membrane of Chicken's Gizzard), Wei Lin Xian (Clematis), and Shui Zhi (Leech). One course of treatment lasted 30 days. The results: after 2-3 courses of treatment, 14 cases significantly improved, 15 cases improved, and 3 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 90.7%.( 5)
Ling Xian Ke Long Tang was used to treat 132 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. The formula consisted of Wei Lin Xian (Clematis), Fu Ling (Hoelen), Ze Xie (Alisma), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche), Xia Ku Cao (Prunella), Dan Shen (Salvia), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena), Zao Jiao Ci (Chinese Honeylocust Spine), Che Qian Zi (Plantain Seed), and Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scales). One course of treatment lasted 7 days. The results: 11 cases recovered after one course of treatment; another 41 cases recovered after a second course of treatment; and after 3 courses of treatment, a total of 98 cases recovered, 31 improved, and 3 did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 97.7%.( 6)
Qian Lie Shu Wan was used to treat 30 cases of prostatic hyperplasia and 30 cases of chronic prostatitis. The patients took the formula one pill each time, 3 times a day. A control group consisting of 8 patients with prostatic hyperplasia and 13 patients with prostatitis orally took Qian Lie Kang, 3 pills each time, 3 times a day. One course of treatment lasted a month in both groups. The results: after 1-2 courses of treatment, of the treatment and control groups, respectively, 17 and 2 cases recovered, 20 and 4 cases significantly improved, 19 and 10 cases improved, 4 and 5 cases did not respond to the treatment, with total effective rates of 93.3% and 76.2%.( 7)
One study treated 36 cases of prostatic hyperplasia by activating the blood to remove stasis, and invigorating the kidney to restore consciousness. The formula consisted of Tao Ren (Persica), E Zhu (Zedoaria), Chuan Shan Jia, Chi Shao (Red Peony), Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria), Niu Xi (Achyranthes), Shan Dou Gen (Subprostrata Sophoa Root), Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium), Che Qian Zi (Plantain Seed), and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark). One course of treatment lasted 20 days. The medication was supplemented by self-massage on the perineum for 20-30 minutes daily. The results: after 2-3 courses of treatment, 9 cases recovered, 10 cases significantly improved, 13 cases improved, and 4 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 88.9%.( 8)
One study treated 68 cases of prostatic hyperplasia externally with Chinese herbs. Mang Xiao (Mirabilitum) and Ming Fan (Alumen) in equal portions were ground into powder and mixed thoroughly. The navel was filled with the mixture and cold water was dripped into the mixture to make it moist. The mixture was kept in place with an adhesive bandage until it was completely dissolved. The treatment was repeated daily. The results: 57 cases significantly improved, and the remaining 11 cases did not respond to the treatment.( 9)
Qian Lie Tong herbal bags were used to treat 70 cases of chronic prostatitis and 30 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. The bags contained Ding Xiang (Male Clove), Jiu Cai Zi (Chinese Chive Seed), She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit), Dang Gui (Dang Gui), Xi Xin (Wild Ginger), Feng Fang (Hornet Nest), etc. The bags were placed on the following acupoints: Shen Que (Ren 8), Qi Hai (Ren 6), Guan Yuan (Ren 4), Chong Ji (Ren 3), etc. The bags were changed once every 15 days. One month constituted one course of treatment. The results: the treatment achieved a total effective rate of 87%.(10)
Retention-enema with Chinese herbs was used to treat 21 cases of prostatic hyperplasia. The formula consisted of She Gan (Belamcanda), Huang Lian (Coptis), Yu Xing Cao (Houttuynia), Huang Qin (Scutellaria), Bai Jiang Cao (Thlaspi), Pu Gong Ying (Dandelion), Huang Bo (Phellodendron), Jin Yin Hua, Che Qian Zi (Plantain Seed), E Zhu (Zedoaria), San Leng (Burreed Tuber), and Tao Ren (Persica). One dose of the formula was boiled to get a decoction of 150ml. The decoction was then filtrated and added 0.25g of 2% procaine powder for transfusion-type retention-enema. The treatment was applied once every evening. 15 days constituted one course of treatment. After 1-3 courses of treatment, 16 cases recovered, 4 cases improved, and 1 case did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 95.2%.( 11)
Another study used Qian Lie Shu decoction in treating 47 cases of prostatic hyperplasia with retention-enema. The formula contained Huang Bo (Phellodendron), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Da Huang (Rhubarb), San Leng (Burreed Tuber), and E Zhu (Zedoaria). Once or twice a day, the patients were treated by retention-enema with 50ml of the decoction of the formula was heated to about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and 30 days constituted one course of treatment. The results: 18 cases significantly improved, 23 cases improved, and 6 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 87.2%.(12)
One study treated 35 cases of prostatic hyperplasia with a combination of Chinese herbs and microwave radiation. Bao Yuan Tong Guan Gao, a paste made of the extract of Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche), Zao Jia (Honeylocust), Xuan Shen (Scrophularia), Huang Bo (Phellodendron), Pao Jia Pian (Baked Pangolin Scale), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta spike), Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), etc. was injected into the patients' anorectum. In addition, the physiotherapy probe of a microwave radiator with the maximum power of 220W and frequency of 2450 MHZ was inserted 6-10cm deep into the anorectum for a 30-minute treatment each day. One course of treatment consisted of 15 daily treatments. The results: after 2-4 courses of treatment, 17 cases recovered, 15 cases improved, and 3 cases did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 91.43%.( 13)
