Congratulations on your expected bundle of joy! Babies are wonderful creatures, but they need a lot of gear. One of the most important things an infant needs is a comfortable and safe baby crib. Here are a few things to think about when purchasing a crib.
- How much room do you have? Space should be the first thing you think about when deciding what kind of crib to buy. You may really like the large ones with drawers underneath and all the bells and whistles, but do you have room for something like that? Measure the space you have and take your tape measure to the store with you. There is nothing worse than purchasing something so big and then having to take it back because it didn't fit.
- Safety first! There are guidelines and regulations for crib manufacturers to follow when putting cribs out on the market. However, many people opt for buying used cribs at flea markets or garage sales, or even using the crib you slept in as a baby. Make sure any used crib you are looking at meets the most up to date safety requirements so your baby and you can sleep peacefully. A list of these requirements can be found at NationalSafetyCouncil.
- Picking a mattress. Some cribs come with mattresses, and others do not. The main thing to keep in mind when choosing a mattress for a newborn infant is to keep the mattress relatively firm and make sure it fits with no gaps inside of the crib. Softer mattresses have been linked to SIDS in some cases, so a firmer mattress is safer for your little one. If there are gaps between the mattress and the crib railings, little arms and legs can get caught and the baby can be seriously injured.
