Qian Lie Shu Wan mainly functions to consolidate the constitution by strengthening the genuine qi, to invigorate the kidney and promote diuresis by nourishing yin. It is mainly used to treat chronic prostatitis, hyperplasia of the prostate, frequent micturition, urgency of urination, bradyuria and hematuria.

Pharmacology
Anti-inflammatory effects: Qian Lie Shu Wan can significantly inhibit carrageenin-induced foot swelling in rats and croton oil-induced ear edema in mice. It can also significantly enhance the production of specific antibodies and increase the level of complement C3 in the serum.

Inhibiting prostatic hyperplasia: The formula can significantly reduce the size of the prostate gland in rats and increase the level of testradiol in the serum. It also significantly affects the level of testosterone.(1)

Clinical Applications
Prostatic Hyperplasia and Chronic Prostatitis
One study treated 106 patients of senile prostatic hyperplasia with Qian Lie Shu Wan (oral administration, one bolus each time, three times a day). Four weeks constituted one course of treatment. The results showed that after 1 to 2 courses of treatment, 23 patients experienced complete resolution, 34 patients significantly improved, 33 patients improved, and 16 patients did not respond to the treatment, a total effective rate of 84.9%. In relieving the main symptoms of the disease, such as frequency of micturition and bradyuria, the treatment had an effective rate above 90%.(2),(3)

One study treated 30 cases each of prostatic hyperplasia and of chronic prostatitis (oral administration, one bolus each time, three times a day). A control group of 21 cases (8 cases of prostatic hyperplasia and 13 cases of prostatitis) took Qian Lie Kang orally, 3 tablets at a time, three times a day. One course of treatment lasted a month for both groups. One to two courses of treatment were given. Of the treatment and control groups, 17 and 2 cases respectively, were resolved, 20 and 4 cases respectively, significantly improved, 19 and 10 cases respectively, improved, and 4 and 5 cases respectively, did not respond to the treatment, with a total effective rate of 93.3% and 76.2%, respectively.(4)

Another study treated 238 cases of chronic prostatitis with this formula, and reported 58% of the patients were either resolved or significantly improved, and overall, the treatment was effective on 86.2% of the patients. (5)
