1. The Shops of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport provides visitors with something that many other airports do not. While other airport terminals spread out their various stores and services, in Raleigh they are all grouped together in an area known as The Shops of RDU Landing.

The Shops at RDU Landing provide a mixture of lesser known retailers, as well as more widely recognizable chain stores. The ACC Shop, located at the airport, is the only kind like it in the country. This store features merchandise from ACC conference teams, including the University of North Carolina. The CNBC Shop gives visitors the chance to pick up newspapers from around the world, as well as catching up on world news with their live, 24-hour news feed.

Hudson News is one of the local shops located in the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. They sell clothing, newspapers, magazines, and a mixture of gift items. A second store, Hudson News & Books is also located in the airport. 2nd ed. Booksellers is another favorite local store inside the airport that offers gently used books. Taste! A Southern Season is another locally owned store, with North Carolina produced foods, and cooking supplies for sale. Other stores located in the Raleigh-Durham International Airport are Borders, Brighton, Brooks Brothers, Sheetz, and a PGA Tour Shop.

2. The Restaurants of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

The majority of restaurants at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport are located inside the area known as The Shops of RDU Landing. The airport carefully regulates the eateries located there, to make sure the prices are the same as they would be outside of the airport.

Restaurants located in the Raleigh-Durham International Airport include local restaurants, and chains known throughout the world. There is a combination of easy to use, and quick options as well as traditional sit down style restaurants, providing something for every type of traveler.

AJ's Tavern is a sit down restaurant featuring alcoholic beverages, and an assortment of sandwiches, soups, and salads. This local favorite was named for two former American presidents from North Carolina. Another local owned restaurant at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport is the Carolina Varsity Bar & Grill. The restaurant serves locally made beer and sports themed foods. The restaurant highlights local sports teams on game day, by using big screen televisions scattered around the room. Sheetz is a small coffee shop located at The Shops of RDU Landing. This is one of the only restaurants in the airport that is open 24 hours every day. They serve specialty sandwiches, and fresh-made coffee.

The other restaurants at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport are A&W All American Food, The Corner, Crosswinds Café, Fresh Attractions, Freshens, Godfather's Pizza, Golden Corral Airport Express, Great American Bagel, and Greenleaf's Grille. Other restaurants include Jersey Mike's, JQ Snacks, Maui Taco, Pinehurst Village Brewery, Popeye's, Starbucks, Triangle Cyber Café, and Wolfgang Puck to Go.

3. Airlines Working at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

As one of the largest airports in the state of North Carolina, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport has service to and from the area by nearly every major airline. The airport is divided into two terminals; Terminal A and Terminal C to better suit the needs of its passengers.

Terminal A is the larger of the two terminals, with nine separate airlines working out of it. AirTran Airlines (Gate 11), America West Airlines (Gate 24), Continental Airlines (Gates 7, 8, and 9), and Express Jet Airlines all occupy Terminal A. Terminal A is also home to Delta Airlines (Gates 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19), Jet Blue Airways (Gate 12), Northwest Airlines (Gates 5 and 6), Southwest Airlines (Gates 25, 26, 27, and 28), and US Airways (Gates 20, 21, 22, and 23). Several of the airlines also have separate systems working out of Terminal A, including Continental Express, Delta Connections, and US Airways Express.

Terminal C houses four different airlines, including those with international flights. Airlines in Terminal C are Air Canada/Air Canada Jazz (Gates 21 and 22), American Airlines/American Eagle (Gates 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25, and 26), Midwest Connect, and United and United Express (Gates 21 and 22).

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport provides access to more than forty cities, with nearly 500 flights made every day. Airlines provide flights to many larger cities and airports across the country, as well as some international flights. Several of the airlines operating out of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport service multiple areas, while some only have flights to one, or two locations.

5. Transportation at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

There are a variety of ways to travel from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport after arriving in town. Dulles Airport Taxi has an exclusive agreement with the airport, and is the only taxi or cab company that provides service to, and from the airport. The company has two access points where passengers can catch their taxi, at Terminal C and at the Southwest Airlines counters. They also have handicapped accessible buses available, but reservations should be made in advance.

Travelers who plan to park their cars at the airport are treated to shuttle buses. Every shuttle bus runs from 4:00 a.m., until the last flight of the night. The Raleigh-Durham Airport also provides an airport taxi service, for passengers seeking bus or train service. Amtrak has train service from Raleigh to a host of other cities. The Triangle Transit Authority is a regional bus system that has access to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Greyhound buses are also located in the area, with service to a variety of cities.

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport is also home to seven rental car agencies. Travelers can rent vehicles from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar Car Rental, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty Car Rental. Each rental car agency has its own drop off, and pick up locations at the airport.

6. Free Services Provided at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport offers a variety of free services to make travel through the airport, and area, easier. One such service is the range of information desks located throughout the airport. Employees and volunteers man the information desks nearly 24 hours a day, from the time the airport opens to the time it closes. Workers at the information desks are available to answer questions, page lost travelers, provide information on flights, and help lost travelers. The information desks also provide information on local attractions of interest.

Free Wi-Fi service is also provided at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport in all areas of the airport. This service is available through AT&T, and all travelers' need are a laptop computer or other electronic devices with Internet capabilities. Visitors are also treated to designated smoking areas both inside, and outside the airport. Smoking sections are available inside the airport at AJ's Tavern, Carolina Varsity Bar & Grill, Triangle Cyber Café, and the Pinehurst Village Brewery. All areas outside the airport terminals are also designated as smoking areas.

The airport also provides a free currency exchange for international travelers, and a lost and found department. For a nominal fee of $2.00, the airport also has baggage cart rentals. The machines take cash, credit cards, and debit cards, and once the cart has been returned, travelers will earn a 25-cent refund.

7. Lodging Available at the Raleigh-International Airport

As one of the largest airports in the state of North Carolina, the area surrounding the airport has a mixture of hotels and lodging options for travelers. Seven hotels are located immediately adjacent to the airport, with many more in a three-mile radius.

Those located adjacent to the airport are Comfort Suites, Extended Stay America, Hilton Raleigh-Durham Airport, Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, the Radisson Hotel, Spring Hill Suites, and the Wyndham.

Within the three mile of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport are the following lodging options: AmeriSuites, Baymont Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, Days Inn, Embassy Suites, Extended Stay America, and a Fairfield Inn. Also located in the vicinity are Hampton Inn Hotels, Hilton Garden, Holiday Inn Express, Homewood Suites, La Quinta Inn & Suites, a Marriott, Microtel Inn, Oakwood Corporate Housing, Residence Inn by Marriott, and Sheraton Imperial. Other hotels in the area include Staybridge Suites, Studio Plus, and a Wingate Inn.

Many of these hotels have free shuttle access to, and from the airport for travelers. They are also accessible by taxi, limousine, city buses, and rental cars.

8. Things to See at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport offers a variety of free activities to entertain travelers waiting for their next flight. Among those is an art gallery. The art gallery works the same as any other gallery, with permanent pieces and pieces on loan, or rotating pieces. The airport showcases work created by local artists, and pieces by artists from across the state of North Carolina. Most of the pieces focus on the history of North Carolina, or a connection to aviation. It also features traveling pieces from around the world. Recently the airport added a 50-foot lighted sculpture made to represent the history of flight, and the connection of the Wright Brothers to North Carolina.

Another site for travelers to see and experience is the RDU Airport Interfaith Chapel. This nondenominational church is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Travelers can sit and worship, or simply enjoy the peaceful and serene atmosphere. A chaplain is also available at certain times every day, or by emergency request.

Travelers are also welcome to visit the RDU Observation Park at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The Observation Park is open seven days a week, and is located near the General Aviation Terminal. Visitors can watch the airplanes landing, and taking off, as well as hear direct communication from the pilots to the ground. The airport provides picnic tables for those who bring a bagged lunch, or buy lunch from one of the many restaurants. There is also a playground located at the Observation Park for anyone with children.

9. Directions to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport is located in the area of North Carolina known as "The Triangle." Three cities comprise The Triangle, including Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. The airport is 10 miles from Durham, and 10 miles from Durham. Access to the airport is available from three major highways leading through the state, with signs directing traffic to the facility.

When traveling on I-40, visitors can take Exit 284B, or Exit 285 and follow the signs to Airport Boulevard, and the airport. Travelers following I-540 should take Exit 2A, which will lead them to the Aviation Parkway/RDU Airport, and keep following the signs pointing to the airport and Airport Boulevard. US-70 is one of the main highways through the state of North Carolina, and the main point of access to the airport. Travelers should look for Exit 293, which is the exit for the Aviation Parkway/Westgate Road. From there, follow the signs leading to the airport and Airport Boulevard.

Once arriving at the airport, visitors will find many signs pointing them to the various locations inside the airport.
