Car insurance is expensive on its own. But if you get a ticket, your car insurance rates can skyrocket. If you're looking for a way to reduce your car insurance after a ticket, follow these steps.

STEP 2:

Increase your deductible. Although it's not ideal, you can reduce your car insurance after a ticket by raising your deductible. Unfortunately, this means that in the event of an accident, you're on the hook for more money. But it may be worth it is you're otherwise a safe driver. Saving a few dollars each month in lower insurance premiums may be worth the extra expense of a higher deductible.

STEP 3:

Eliminate comprehensive and collision coverage on older cars. Sometimes people pay more for insurance than what their cars are worth! If your deductible is higher than the value of your car, consider removing collision from your insurance coverage. In the event of an accident, you won't be insured. However, you won't be on the hook for a deductible either. You can put that money toward a new vehicle.

STEP 4:

Have one policy per household. Most car insurance companies offer a discount for multiple vehicle policies. Put all cars and vehicles in your household on the same car insurance policy, and you'll save around 20% on your monthly charges. Furthermore, get your house insurance through the same insurance company, and you'll reduce your car insurance even more.

STEP 5:

Drive less. You can reduce your car insurance after a ticket by changing your driving habits. Specifically, join a car pool. When you first signed up for coverage with your insurance company, you were asked how far you drive to work every day. If you can tell you insurance company that you no longer drive to work every day, or that you do so very rarely, you can likely reduce your car insurance by several dollars a month.

STEP 6:

Drive safely. Of course, the best way to reduce your car insurance after a ticket is to drive safely and don't get any more tickets! Obey the rules of the road by wearing a seatbelt, driving the speed limit, and staying focused on driving. Eventually, your good behavior should earn you some lower insurance premiums. And if it doesn't, consider shopping around. Car insurance is a competitive industry and there will likely be some other agency that is willing to help you reduce your car insurance after a ticket.
