Recent years have seen the cost of gas and electricity rise considerably. This rising cost combined with the current economic downturn has understandably lead to people looking at ways in which they can reduce the amount they spend on utility bills. A major part of utility bills is the cost of central heating. Fortunately there are many things that people can do to reduce the amount they spend on heating their home.

Replace Inefficient Heating Systems

If your central heating system is over ten years old you may want to consider replacing it. Installing a newer more efficient heating system is a good way to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat your home and so reduce your bills. Condensing and Combi Boilers both make good replacements for aging systems.

Central Heating Grants & Rebates

If you live in the UK you may qualify for a central heating grant. The UK government offers grants of up to £2700 to be put towards the cost of central heating, loft or cavity wall insulation and draught proofing. To qualify you need to either own your own home or be renting from a private landlord and be receiving an income or disability related benefit. People over the age of 60 may also qualify for a central heating rebate of £300.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Studies estimate that as much as a third of a homes heat is lost through its walls. One way to reduce the amount of heat escaping is to install cavity wall insulation. Cavity wall insulation makes heating your home more efficient and so reduces the amount you need to spend on heating your home. A further benefit of cavity insulation is that having it installed can actually increase the value of your home.

Solar Hot Water Systems

Solar hot water systems are a way to provide your home with hot water in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way. The amount of solar energy reaching the roof of an average home in the UK can easily contribute to a significant part of the households hot water needs and so reducing the use of the standard water heater.

As can be seen there are several ways in which you can reduce the amount you spend on central heating. These cost savings can all be done without the need to compromise on keeping your home warm all year round.
