(NC)-Meal planning for a family with varying likes and dislikes can be challenging at anytime of the year. But it can be especially frustrating during the holiday season when you want the whole family to sit and enjoy the same holiday meal together. With significant age disparities, pleasing everyone is a daunting task, so look for recipes that include ingredients which add texture and flavour for the adults as well as familiarity for the younger guests.

"A whimsical ingredient that kids love is Rice Krispies because of its crunchy texture," says Trish Magwood, chef and owner of Toronto's Dish Cooking Studio. "Since Rice Krispies have a subtle flavour, it's easy to mix with other ingredients and it's also great to use for crusting instead of breadcrumbs. It's the perfect go-to pantry essential."

As an added incentive to finish their entree, invite your children to help out in the kitchen with the preparation. Kids love to get hands-on during meal preparation and when dinner is served, they will want to show everyone how great their meal tastes by gulping it down.

The following is a tried and tested recipe that features the surprise ingredient and will be a guaranteed hit with everyone at your dinner table this holiday season. You can find other creative holiday recipes like this one online at www.ricekrispies.ca.

Rice Krispies Lime Baked Fish

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

500 mL 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal crushed to 250 mL (1 cup)

50 mL 1/4 cup finely chopped almonds

15 mL 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

50 mL 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 egg whites or 1 egg

45 mL 3 tbsp lime juice

1 mL 1/4 tsp each: salt and ground ginger

2 mL 2 tsp seasoned pepper

500 g 1 lb fish fillets (such as tilapia, sole or haddock)

Preparation:

1. In a large plate or shallow pan, mix together crushed cereal, almonds and parsley. Place flour on second plate.

2. In a small bowl, mix together egg whites, 30 mL (2 tbsp) of the lime juice, salt and seasonings.

3. Dip fish in flour, shaking off excess. Dip in egg mixture, draining slightly, then coat with cereal mixture. Place in single layer on foil-lined baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray. Drizzle with remaining lime juice.

4. Bake at 200°C (400°F) about 15 minutes or until fish flakes in thickest part, when tested with fork.
