Selecting the right Rug for your home

Author: search rankpros

There are many things to be taken into account when choosing whether to have a rug in your home, before you correctly identify the right type of rug for you surroundings. The main reason people appear to buy rugs is to enhance their décor or for general interior design in which case choosing the right rug very carefully is extremely important.

A rug can completely change the way your room feels, choose the right option and you can inject a real feeling of warmth, comfort and cosiness, get it wrong and the colours can clash, the room looks cluttered and it will no longer feel as relaxing.

There are some relatively simple questions you can ask yourself in order to determine what style, shape and type of rug will suit your home.

Are you looking for it to be a focal point in the room?

If so you will need to be bold with your choice of rug in terms of colours, size and texture. Possibly consider using round rugs in this instance.

Do you want it to group items of furniture?

If so the size of the rug needs to be considered heavily here. Each item of furniture would need to be able to touch the rug so it can define a specific grouping of that furniture therefore almost creating a separate area of the room. This should be considered for larger rooms and would normally be in the form of a rectangular rug.

Is it to enhance the colour scheme of the room?

There are a couple of things to consider in this instance. Firstly if the room is busy in terms of décor it would be an idea to pick a more subtle rug in terms of pattern or design, usually one or two colours. Secondly the rug would need to capture or contain the rooms dominant or accent colours.

Is it to add warmth and comfort to the room?

If so then your choice of rug needs to contain warm and neutral colours. These types of rug are put to good use in houses and flats with open floor plans as they can assist in creating the illusion of separation. Shaggy rugs are normally an ideal option when looking to add the feeling of warmth.

So we have covered how to choose a rug however now we will suggest a few reasons why rugs can be very useful in the home: -

- Cover carpet stains

- Prevent carpet stains

- Cover well-worn areas of carpet in the home i.e. landing, porch etc.

- Area pets can use as their bed

- Separates areas of open plan floor spaces

- Adds warmth to a room

- Creates a focal point in the room

Whatever reason you are getting a rug the important thing is that it suits your taste and your home so choose carefully.
