Having a scar on your face, or any other part of your body for that matter, can be embarrassing and annoying, at best. If you're one of the people who decided to take action to remove or lessen the appearance of a scar with scar revision cosmetic surgery, you're probably excited about seeing your new skin after it heals. You can ensure that your skin looks as smooth and as scar-free as possible after scar revision cosmetic surgery by following these steps on how to care for your stitches afterwards.

Change your bandages as required. When you leave the hospital after scar revision cosmetic surgery, you will have bandages or steri-strips covering your stitches. Your surgeon will probably suggest when you remove these bandages. But in general, they should be left on your stitches for no more than a day after your surgery.

Expose your stitches. The evening of your surgery and in the days that follow, it is important to remove the bandages to expose your stitches. They will need fresh air to heal properly. Plus it is good for the skin around that area to be able to dry out a bit. Take off your bandage and discard of it.

Clean your stitches. With your stitches exposed, you need to go through the careful task of cleaning them. Use a q-tip or a cotton swab that has been dipped in hydrogen peroxide and gently touch it to each stitch on each scar. It is crucial that you use a different cotton swab for each scar so that you don't spread bacteria or infection from one to another.

Protect the area. Once your stitches from your scar cosmetic revision surgery have been cleaned, you need to protect the area from infection. A topical antibiotic will do this as well as help to speed healing. Using a clean cotton swab, apply a small amount to each stitch.

Care for your stitches often. In order for your stitches to heal best, you need to clean the scars around them every 12 hours following the procedure above. First remove any dirt or crusted areas around the sutures. Apply hydrogen peroxide, and then reapply your antibiotic ointment. By continuously putting this ointment on your stitches, you'll promote healthy skin re-growth, which should lessen the look of your scars.

For a week following your scar revision cosmetic surgery, you need to continue to clean, disinfect and protect your stitches in order to promote healing.
