That's an ambitious plan. One that begins with an all-new IS that has morphed into a junior GS of sorts, losing a bit of its appealing razor-edge sharpness in the process. Perhaps it's because this new IS is a bigger (3.5 in. longer, 3.2 in. wider, with a wheelbase stretched by 2.4 in.) and heavier (3620 lb.) car, jam-packed with such hardware as radar-based active cruise control, a back-up camera, keyless ignition, eight airbags and a pair of all-new direct-injected V-6 engines.
The Lexus reputation for building high-quality, ultra-quiet and fine-driving semi-sporting machines is about to come to an abrupt halt. Because what Lexus has here, with the new IS F, is a bona fide hot-rod — the most un-Lexus-like Lexus ever put into production.
Nobody likes to finish off the podium, but it's not as bad as it might seem for the first Lexus to wear the stylized "F" — and the first Lexus capable of decidedly "non-Lexus" performance in the vein of the BMW M3. Its explosive 0–60 and quarter-mile times of 4.2 and 12.6 seconds put it second in the test, just a tick slower than the Mercedes.
Is a hybrid necessarily better in this application? Well, it is smooth. One could almost say vibrationless when its 4-cam 32-valve 5.0-liter V-8 shuts off automatically at most every traffic light, and during very low-speed operation.
The Lexus RX 400h offers more power, more features and better fuel economy than the regular RX 330. That may be enough justification for the $4,000-$5,000 premium over a loaded RX 330. A better justification may be knowing that you are driving one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles on the planet, cleaner than electric cars when the big picture is considered. Another justification is a little less tangible: The RX 400h is a technological marvel and would be an interesting vehicle to own.
At first glance there's little to distinguish the petrol-electric Lexus from other models in the firm's RX line-up. There's the same high-riding stance, long overhangs and unusually steeply raked rear. However, take a closer look at the big off-roader and you'll notice small hybrid badges on the flanks and one on the tailgate.
