The best things come in small packages, and to prove it, Suzuki is bringing its tiniest model to UK showrooms. The Alto was first launched in Britain in 1979, but last appeared in 2006. To coincide with its 30th anniversary, the seventh-generation version has now been released.
The new 2009 Suzuki Equator is a mid-size pickup truck aimed squarely at active outdoor sports enthusiasts. The Equator is Suzuki's version of the newly redesigned 2009 Nissan Frontier. Equator is visually differentiated from the Frontier by its unique front styling.
The husky midsize Equator's chassis and powertrain are identical to the Nissan Frontier's, which in turn shares lots of equipment with the full-size Nissan Titan. Suzuki Equator has a fresh front-end appearance, six standard airbags, a more comprehensive warranty, and a different (cheaper though not yet finalized) price.
Since it's a compact SUV, the Suzuki Grand Vitara isn't all that grand in scale, but it's more space efficient than a lot of utility and crossover vehicles. Short overhangs, fairly straight and vertical sides and cargo door, and excellent outward visibility designed for trail use are equally welcome in urban environs.
On the highway, the Grand Vitara handles as grandly as a car-based SUV. That's to say it has a smooth ride. It may not be as smooth as a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V, but it's comfortable enough and easy to drive.
The all-new 2006 Grand Vitara is bigger all around than the previous-generation (pre-2006) models. In fact, it has gone from being the second smallest (just ahead of the Jeep Wrangler) to among the largest of the compact SUVs, which has become a highly competitive segment.
The Splash is Suzuki's fourth new model in three years. That's some product offensive, with the city car following on from the Swift, Grand Vitara and SX4. The brand's latest generation of cars has clearly been styled to appeal to European tastes.
The Suzuki SX4 comes with one of the most powerful engines in its class. It has a wide track for good handling and it seems to have a solid body. The downside is that it's relatively heavy, and weight is the enemy of performance and fuel economy.
Climbing inside the Suzuki SX4 we discovered a pleasant cockpit with no gimmicks. Everything is well placed and the brushed aluminum trim seems to be well finished. The radio controls are found on the same plane as the center of the steering wheel, with three easy-to-use climate control knobs located just below them. The interior materials include sturdy plastics on par with those of the Honda Fit, meaning they are among the best in a class of cars notorious for cost-cutting.
In five-seat configuration, the XL7 provides a decent amount of interior space in both rows of seats. Indeed Suzuki claims the leg room in the second row of seats is the most generous in the segment.
