The developers of ShowHome 3D Interior Design have made use of cutting edge gaming techniques within their software. Of course the use of these particular techniques does require that the host system is powerful enough to cope with the demands placed upon it by the software, so check that your system fits the bill before buying. Unlike some other software titles, which carry out a diagnostic check prior to installation, ShowHome 3D Interior Design installs itself first and then runs its diagnostics as part of its initial launch. This mode of operation could leave you with the situation where the software is installed but refuses to run because your system is deemed under-specified, as happened to me.

The ShowHome methodology is modular. You start with a floor plan and then position various rooms. Next you can add doors, windows, plumbing and electrical features; populate the rooms with furniture and appliances; and finally apply finishing touches that can include location, measurements used and lighting features. A wizard is supplied to lead you through the various stages and there is also a tutorial to help introduce you to some of the program's more interesting features.
Your initial view on entering ShowHome 3D is of a top-down 2D-style environment consisting of a user-interface control panel and a grid that will house the building's floor plan. The program contains a range of pre-defined objects that can be added to the floor plan and customised to suit your needs. Various types and styles of room can be selected from a list that includes bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchens, and bathrooms by simply dragging & dropping the chosen component onto the floor plan. By default, rooms will come with some furniture but you can always add or replace items to suit your circumstances.
While the planning process is best suited to a top-down 2D environment, the program switches to 3D for viewing your work. You can cycle through a 3D free view to look at the building from any angle or distance or opt for a 3D first person view and take a walk through the virtual residence. A combination of keyboard and mouse provides navigational features and also allows you to walk through walls and doors, plus interact with certain objects. You can open and close windows, cupboards, drawers, kitchen equipment and turn lights on/off.
Results can be quite impressive although the software does put a strain on the hardware. To gain the full benefit you really need a high-end video card with the latest drivers. If you're got that though, this is worth a look.
