Focus is on the organization s future technical objectives and involves the process of assessing factors that have led to a company s success in the technical field, identifying business strengths, and exploring business opportunities.

To make an organization successful, strategic managers should have the following skills required in succeeding in a strategic technical management job:

Planning Skills

Has a strong understanding of target clients and what future products and services they may want and need
Visualizes the status of a business five to ten years from now
Foresees future situations and creates a visioning process
Has a broad perspective, awareness, and vision, of future trends and developments

Problem Solving Skills

Assesses how everyday business decisions can affect long term plans
Analyzes strategies of the competitors
Assesses the strengths and limitations of a business
Develops solutions to overcome identified obstacles in a business

Decision-Making Skills

Has a high awareness of internal and external clues that can be used as a guide to future directions, in making links and realizing opportunities
Makes strategic decisions regarding projects and the specific clients and stakeholders to serve
Has clear milestones to review the progress of programs and projects and make the changes to improve performance

Delegation Skills

Steps back and looks at the overall business scenario
Avoids micro-managing the staff or getting lost in operational details
Identifies the skills and abilities of the different staff
Motivates the staff through rewards and punishment
Recognizes individual needs and redesigns jobs or sets attainable challenging goals

Communication Skills

Encourages and uses the team to share and open ideas in the workplace
Is non-judgmental and always keeps an open mind
Regularly communicates upward and lateral
Easily learns the skills needed to communicate accordingly

Relationship Building Skills

Builds constructive relationships with the staff, fellow managers, the client, and suppliers
Accepts the limitations of his professional expertise and contributes as much as team members

Skills in Managing Oneself

Takes time out to think, relax and not be hasty in making decisions
Uses experiences to think of better strategic issues
Reviews that his line of thinking has been validated versus benchmarks
Is realistic and honest about what is achievable
