The uncontested winner in the MP3 player category has always been Winamp. It has an outstanding feature-base and a huge following, a situation that's unlikely to change as far as we can see. But that doesn't mean there aren't other excellent players out there. In fact, there are several players now available that do some things much better than Winamp. One such player is Sonique, from Terra Lycos (and formerly from Night

Spock's MP3 Player of Choice

The first noticeable feature of Sonique is its interface. And what an interface! It is completely out of this world compared to all other MP3 players, but at the same time its far more beautiful as well. The design is a pleasant mix of textures, neon colors, and futuristic semi-transparencies. Let's just say that if the Starship Enterprise had MP3s, Spock would listen to them using this player. The interface is that cool!

Did we mention that it's beautiful? That's the first word that came to mind when we ran this audio player. The windowless design is one of the most unique we've ever seen. Simply beautiful! The different menus scroll into place as smoothly as any door on Star Trek. The visual design and layout is superb. We could look at this all day!

But Sonique is more than just a pretty interface. It also has the muscle to be your sole audio player. There are four levels of sizing. Here I use the names that make more sense to me. They are: Large, Medium (this has the most unique shape), Small, and Tray.

Summary

Sonique can play all the standard audio formats you may want to listen to and it has a competent playlist editor. There are some very appealing visual plug-ins and it even has the ability to save any audio file to WAV format at about twice the normal playing speed. Awesome!

The only drawback to this player is its navigation and slight learning curve. It's a bit confusing to get around the program at first, but at the same time it's so much fun interacting with it that you probably won't mind the detours. After a few days of using Sonique you might just want to replace your current audio player with it! Even if you have no intention of changing players, this program is worth the download just to look at. Go get it and find out for yourself!
