Summer is a great time to get out and explore the outdoors with your four-legged friend. Whether you're heading off for the day or for an overnight stay, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly and that you and your pooch are prepared for the trip.

Choosing your destination

Do you and your dog like to run on the beach? Hike in the forest? Or, perhaps you are urbanites and prefer pavement under your feet! There are lots of great resources where you can find maps and more to plan your trip. Check online or head to a visitor information centre and see what you find. Make sure you choose an environment you will both be comfortable in. And, if you plan to stay overnight make sure the lodging is pet-friendly.

Getting to your destination

While you may love the open road, your dog may not be so thrilled about spending even an hour in the car. About one in six dogs experience motion sickness. Your veterinarian can help. A new treatment is available to prevent motion sickness in dogs. It is the only one specifically for dogs and better yet, it won't make your pooch drowsy so he will be ready to go for a walk or run whenever you are.

Enjoying your journey

Wherever you decide to go, make sure you take time to explore. Stop for a walk along the way so that you can both stretch your legs. You never know, your side stops might be even more interesting than your planned destination!
