2 . Supplemental Health Insurance Overview

These days, when the topic of health insurance can be a hot button issue, the idea of supplemental health insurance often isn’t even entertained. The truth is, however, that no matter what type of health insurance that you have, supplemental health insurance is something that everyone should at least find out about, if not consider obtaining. The cost of health care is one of the biggest concerns for people in North Carolina these days. Although standard health insurance can do much to alleviate the concern when health care is needed, supplemental health insurance can go even farther to ease the financial burden. Deciding whether or not you should have supplemental health care and then choosing the right one for you can be quite an involved process, however, and some careful research is needed before you can make an informed decision.

Health insurance is becoming a very necessary part of everyday life, but some health insurance plans that are provided by employers or that self employed individuals buy for themselves do not cover enough costs to keep health care, especially catastrophic health care, from being a financial concern. Some health care insurance plans have large deductibles that have to be met before they will start paying part of the costs; others may cover hospitalization costs well but not regular doctor visits. Supplemental health insurance can often balance out the cost of health care, making both doctor visits and hospitalization less stressful when they are needed.

3 . What is supplemental health insurance?

Health care insurance is purchased to offset the cost of health care when it is needed, whether that is regular doctor visits in North Carolina or hospitalization. When people have health insurance, they do not have to pay the entire cost of health care; in many instances the cost is greatly reduced by the insurance. There are, however, costs that still must be borne by each individual, and this is where supplemental plans can make a difference. Supplemental health care plans are programs that can take care of a lot of the costs that primary health care plans do not, often leaving individuals with little, or in rare instances, no out of pocket expenses. Supplemental health care plans are not designed to take care of all or most medical care costs on their own; they are designed to narrow the gap between what primary health care insurance pays and what patients pay out of their own pockets. Though supplemental health care plans do charge premiums, these premiums are, in most cases, significantly lower than those that you pay for primary health care insurance plans.

A large percentage of primary health care insurance plans are obtained through your place of employment. The employer normally pays anywhere from half to all of the cost of the primary health care insurance for employees, with the employees paying the difference. Very few employers offer supplemental health care insurance as part of a benefits package, however, so individuals in North Carolina who are interested in obtaining this type of insurance must do this on their own. This takes some research and informed decisions.

4 . The different types of plans

There can be many different types of supplemental health care insurance plans. Which type of supplemental health care insurance plan you choose will depend on your own personal circumstances, including your financial as well as medical circumstances. One popular type of supplemental insurance health plan is the one that pays you directly if you are sick or injured. A good example of this type of supplemental health care plan is the one that is offered by the company Aflac™. One of the leading suppliers of supplemental health care insurance plans, Aflac™ has a plan that literally sends policy holders money while they are undergoing going certain types of medical treatment. This money can be used for any reason, such as paying all or part of the difference between what the primary health care insurance plan pays and what the individual pays, or for paying bills while the policy holder is undergoing health care treatment. Aflac™ offers different types of plans, such as hospital confinement plans or long term care plans.

Other types of supplemental health insurance plans are those that are purchased by senior citizens whose primary health care plan is Medicare. Though Medicare is a great help to senior citizens who are retired, it is almost always a good idea to buy supplemental health care insurance to offset the costs that Medicare do not pay. The supplemental health care insurance plans offered to help take care of what Medicare does not pay are usually quite reasonably priced, and there are enough to choose from so that senior citizens in North Carolina can choose the plan that is right for them.
