Tax Services

Whether you prepare your own income tax return or trust it to a professional or computer software, there are tax preparation services for every budget and situation.

1. Tax Services Overview

Professional tax services have become both easier to deal with and more complex in recent years. Easier because we can either turn our W2 forms over to the experts or prepare our income tax returns ourselves using computer software from the comfort of our homes. The complexity isn't really that difficult to understand, however new tax laws bring about new tax credits and new situations where they may or may not be applied.

For anyone who wants to prepare their own income tax return, there is a wealth of information online as well as tax return preparation software, some of it absolutely free that will guide the average taxpayer through the process of preparing and filing his or her tax return. You don't have to have a love of math or any specialized knowledge to complete your individualized return. In fact, even if someone else does prepare it, you should understand enough about the return to verify its accuracy.

Tax time is the perfect time to get your financial house in order if it isn't already. Visit the tax professionals who prepare your return or visit their websites to learn about the additional services they offer. Services such as estate planning, planning for retirement or college and budgeting in such a way as to secure your financial future can make a huge difference in your overall financial portfolio.

2. Internal Revenue Service

The Internal Revenue Service, or IRS is the agency that governs income taxes and sees to it that we all pay our taxes. While there are certain rules and laws that are in place for everyone, it is in the best interest of every taxpayer to abide by these rules and at the same time take advantage of all the possible tax breaks. For those who do their own taxes, the IRS has a comprehensive website that is user-friendly that offers information on all aspects of preparing and filing your income tax return.

There's a lot behind the front page of the Internal Revenue Service website. You can download tax tables, forms, worksheets and get answers to a wide array of tax questions. You can also access the free filing sites from here as well. Wondering when to expect your refund? You can check the status of your refund easily on the IRS website whether you filed it from home or employed a tax services professional to file it for you. Even if you mailed it in, you can still check the status. You'll need to know the exact amount of the refund you are anticipating and the primary taxpayer's social security number.

Of course, not everyone receives a refund. Unfortunately, there are those of us who have to pay additional taxes over and above what was taken out of each paycheck during the tax year. There are various methods one can use to pay taxes owed including paying online with a debit or credit card. Payment plans may also be arranged but penalties and interest may apply.

Although tax issues can be complex, there is ready information available for anyone striving to understand their personal tax situation. For those who aren't, there are plenty of companies willing to take on your tax return.

3. Income Tax Preparation Services

During tax season, one can hardly watch one television show without seeing at least one advertisement for income tax preparation services. Some of us want nothing more than to turn everything over to the professionals and let them handle the situation, whether we're getting a refund or owe taxes.

We have a lot of choices today as to who to entrust with our tax preparation. Fees as well as services vary; while some tax preparation services spring up every tax season and disappear immediately after April 15, others operate year-round and offer comprehensive services.

Your choices aren't necessarily limited to either dropping your tax information off to a professional or preparing it yourself. Some of the larger income tax preparation services offer a solution that features the best of both worlds. You simply complete an online questionnaire and provide your tax data which you can do from home and the professional will contact you by phone or email, answer any questions you might have and complete your return. This is the perfect solution for those who don't want to make an appointment or go to a tax office but who still want personal and professional advice.

Suppose you're granting the IRS what amounts to an interest-free loan each year and wait until you file your tax return to get your money returned to you. Professional tax services can assist you with changing your withholding status or pinpoint other areas in which you can add money to your paycheck instead of waiting for the lump sum disbursement in the form of a yearly refund.

4. Income Tax Preparation Software

You don't have to have specialized knowledge to prepare your own tax return. For a small investment you can purchase income tax preparation software that is easy to use. In most cases, just answer the questions and before you know it, your return is prepared and ready to file. You can then go a step further and file it electronically if you choose.

Prices start at about $19.95 and can run as high as $69.95 or more depending upon the features the software offers. You can also choose to purchase a physical disc or download the software. As with most products, features vary from product to product so the right software for one taxpayer may not be the right choice for another. While all of the income tax preparation software will get you through the federal return, some also offer state return preparation, while others offer advice on retirement planning and various tax strategies.

Using income tax preparation software provides built-in checks that guard against simple mathematical errors that could potentially cost you big bucks. You can also check the status of your return using this software after you've electronically transmitted your return. Another plus to using tax preparation software is that you can import financial information from your accounting program which can save even more time. Be sure and check the features before you make your purchase if you're interested in this step as not all tax preparation software offers this advantage.

Although many of the commercial tax services advertise free e-filing, most of the time you'll have to let them prepare your tax return to take advantage of this freebie. This is a viable solution for those who don't have a home computer or anyone who doesn't relish the idea of doing their own taxes.

5. Get Your Refund Fast

Twenty years ago there was little choice as far as the method and the speed in which you could receive your income tax refund. No matter how much you watched your mailbox, it took a good six weeks for that check from Uncle Sam to arrive. Today, however, you can receive your refund in as little as 10 days and even sooner if you're willing to pay hefty fees.

There were 73 million tax returns e-filed in 2006 with 20 million of those filed from home computers, according to the IRS. In fact, the Internal Revenue Service encourages the electronic filing of tax returns because it saves them time and money.

For those wanting to receive their tax refund as fast as possible and who don't mind paying hefty fees, they might consider the "rapid refund." So named because the customer receives their refund in as little as 24-48 hours, the rapid refund, also known as the Refund Anticipation Loan, is actually a loan funded by a lending institution and processed by the business providing your tax services. Once the customer's return has been electronically accepted by the IRS, those choosing and being accepted for the RAL can quickly see their refund minus 10% or more.

For some, it is worth the hefty fees to get their money almost immediately; for others the time it takes to receive their refund without paying expedition fees is acceptable.

6. Free Income Tax Preparation and Filing Resources

While some of the free income tax preparation and tax services are dependent upon age and income, there are still some free resources for almost everyone. In fact, through the IRS's free file program, taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $52,000 or less can prepare and e-file their federal returns for free. According to the Internal Revenue Service, this covers approximately 70% of taxpayers.

This free program is made possible through an alliance with the IRS and several companies who, collectively make up the Free File Alliance, LLC. The IRS wins when you take advantage of this service because electronic filing saves them time and money. The reduction of errors alone saves tens of thousands of hours spent combing through error-ridden returns. The companies that provide the tax preparation software win because inevitably, some consumers purchase other tax preparation products such as state return preparation or filing. The taxpayers win because they are getting a valuable service absolutely free with no obligation to purchase anything whatsoever.

The IRS also offers separate volunteer-based free tax assistance for those who qualify that may include assistance with tax preparation as well as free electronic filing. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) sites can be found in communities across the United States. Rather than web-based, this is a program found in community centers where taxpayers can get one-on-one tax assistance. Based on income, most taxpayers who qualify for this program will have an income of $39,000 or less.

The Internal Revenue Service website has information on all of these free programs. For those without Internet access at home, almost all public libraries offer free Internet access and many libraries also have information about these free programs as well as tax forms.

7. Tax Credits

Every year millions of dollars in tax refunds and tax reductions go unclaimed because so many taxpayers fail to claim all the credits they're entitled to. Tax laws change from year to year; new tax credits are added and old ones climb. It's imperative to stay on top of these changes either by staying informed or wisely choosing the professional tax services that will prepare your income tax return.

Some taxpayers erroneously believe that if they don't have children at all or don't have children living at home they won't be entitled to any tax breaks whatsoever. This simply isn't true. While tax credits depend upon the individual situation, there are many different types of credits and as many different rules for claiming them. For example, millions of dollars go unclaimed each year for the Earned Income Credit, which is a credit for low and moderate income taxpayers. While this credit is much more for those who have a child or children, in some cases, those without children also qualify for this credit. There's also a separate Child Tax Credit as well as more than one kind of educational tax benefits.

The kind of car you drive can have a bearing on your individual income tax return as there are certain tax credits for those who purchase hybrids. Until you research the credits you may be eligible to claim, you could be passing up benefits that could have a huge impact on your tax return.

Understandably, not everyone wants to take a crash course in Income Tax Preparation 101. While tax software can make preparing your own return much easier than it has ever been, the result is still dependent upon the information you provide. If you don't have the time to devote to making sure your return is thorough or the thought of touching a tax return makes you breathe heavier, you're not alone. Just hand the reins over to a trusted professional who is interested in giving your return the undivided attention it deserves.

8. Financial Planning

Many tax service professionals offer much more than the seasonal income tax return preparation. Many tax experts are also financial planning experts as well and can offer a host of other services. In fact, these other services can work in conjunction with tax services to make the most of your entire financial portfolio. For example, tax experts can assist you with planning for retirement, college or saving for your first home. These experts possess the education and the experience that most of us don't and that's why we can benefit from these specialized services.

The right expert can assist you in understanding the difference between the different kinds of IRAs, how best to handle your 401(k) and offer advice on what kinds of decisions you may need to make in order to secure your financial future. Not necessarily the far-off future either, although that is certainly worth planning for as soon as possible. Just think about the difference you could make in your income tax return if you consider each financial transaction with tax benefits in mind.

Taxes are just one aspect of your financial portfolio yet once you delve into all that taxes encompass, you've taken a huge step toward understanding and making the most of your personal financial picture. Without financial planning, as your successes increase, so will your tax bracket – and only your tax bracket. By planning ahead and seeking the advice of experts, you can make your money work for you instead of you merely working for your money.

9. Drive Your Tax Return Home

For those expecting a refund who are also in the market for a new or used car, car dealers across the United States will prepare and file your return free of charge and use all or part of your return as a down payment. While some require you to bring in your W-2 form, others only require your last pay stub of the year. While this may be a viable solution for some, especially those in desperate need of a car, you'll likely have more bargaining power by utilizing a standard tax preparation service and showing up at the car dealer with cash in hand.

By purchasing a car in this manner, you may find that the amount of your tax refund has a direct bearing on the amount you're expected to lay out for a down payment. You may also have more lenders from which to choose by shopping around. Either way, it is an option that can come in handy if you find yourself without wheels around tax time.

Most businesses that provide professional tax services offer at least some sort of protection in case the tax preparer has made an error. In the unlikely event that an error occurs, the professional income tax preparation service will reimburse any penalties or fees you might face as a direct result of their error. Make sure you are offered the same protection regardless of who prepares your tax return.
