Most full time teaching positions require a four-year college degree and teaching certification. Getting the certification will vary by region and state. Different states have different requirements, and some states maintain very high standards. It is typically expected, and usually required, that students spend a lot of time teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher before graduating with a bachelor’s degree. This provides the aspiring teacher with the opportunity to get hands-on experience under the guidance of a certified and experienced teacher.

Keep in mind that to teach at a college or university having a teaching degree is not required. At the university level, it’s important that faculty members have outstanding credentials and extensive research in the fields they wish to teach. Most often a Ph.D. is also needed. If you have a four-year degree, but you do not have a teaching certification, there will still be some opportunities to get started in teaching because of the nationwide teacher shortage. These opportunities are usually limited to urban areas in critical school districts with poor teacher retention rates, or in rural areas that need secondary teachers in specific content areas such as chemistry and math. Check with your local area to determine requirements for substitute teachers. If you’re interested in a career change, it might be possible to begin working immediately as a substitute teacher while pursuing the required coursework at a nearby college or university. In some cases, you might need as little as four courses, depending on the coursework you completed while pursuing your undergraduate degree.

For individuals serious about being a college professor, relocation is usually necessary. In many cases, finding a tenured faculty position in your area of expertise requires relocating to a different state.

Of all the types of teaching careers, being a college professor is usually the one that comes with the most prestige. When most individuals think of college professors, they think of ivory towers, tall bookcases of leather-bound books, and other positive images. While preschool and elementary teachers have hard jobs, some people unfortunately view teaching younger students to be the equivalent of babysitting.

If you are considering a career change and decide to work as a substitute teacher while you pursue your teaching certificate, make sure you don’t make any permanent career decisions based on your experience as a substitute teacher. Students typically treat substitute teachers differently from their everyday teachers. Substitute teachers have a tough job, and once they eventually settle into a permanent classroom, they usually don’t encounter some of the same difficulties they most likely will encounter while substitute teaching. Also, the pay you’ll receive as a substitute teacher is not representative of the pay you’ll receive when you eventually start teaching in a permanent position.

Also, as a permanent teacher, you’ll usually receive mentoring and guidance from other veteran teachers. Substitute teachers are usually on their own and receive little or no preparation before beginning.

Some private schools don’t require their teachers to hold state certifications, so having a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology might be sufficient for you to get a job teaching high school science classes, even if you don’t have a teaching certificate in the subject matter. The educational qualifications of the faculty will vary depending on the school. Some private schools will require that you possess a state certification, while others may not have this requirement.

Beginning a teaching career at a private school will be different as compared to a public institution. Private schools offer a value-based education. The value could be a specific religion or focus such a Montessori classroom. Your background and education may or may not fit the general guidelines for teachers. It would be a good idea to send a cover letter to the school explaining your interest in teaching. Hopefully, the school will get back to you, and you could move forward from there. In many private institutions, having a specific degree is valued more highly. For example, having a degree in math would be valued more than having a degree in math education.

Teaching is an interesting profession in that teachers are frequently required to go back to school themselves. Most states have minimum requirements that teachers need to meet, so it’s not unusual for a teacher to spend all year teaching other students and then have to take classes in the summertime. The good thing is that school districts usually provide tuition reimbursement to teachers as a job perk, so you most likely won’t have to spend money to take courses.

Fortunately, there are usually a wide variety of classes that count towards the credits teachers need to earn every year. A teacher who always enjoyed art, but only took one art class during college, could take art classes. Some teachers opt to take classes that are directly related to the subject areas they usually teach.

There are other jobs for individuals who want to teach besides being an elementary or high school teacher. Some individuals who are interested in a career in teaching follow that career path in a corporate setting. Large and small companies need staff to train employees. Some individuals love to teach others, but would prefer to teach adults. A career in corporate education can be an extremely rewarding and satisfying career choice. Still, fortunately for America’s youth, there will always be individuals who love teaching elementary school students. Lunch menus, recess, and construction-paper cutouts of apples are part of the daily lives of elementary school teachers, and some teachers love those aspects of teaching elementary school students.

A typical corporate instructor usually trains new employees on company policies. In addition to corporate America, government has many career opportunities for adult educators.

Nearly all states administer tests to prospective teachers. These tests are usually required for certification. Teachers usually take a core group of tests in important areas like pedagogy and instruction. High school teachers also usually have to take tests in the subject areas they teach. Some high school teachers use their continuing education to take classes in another related area, and then they take the required tests to get an additional certification.

You will have to pay for the costs of your teaching tests, and the cost might be several hundred dollars. If you don’t pass the tests, you might have to wait several months before being allowed to take the tests again. That’s why it’s a good idea to prepare thoroughly before taking the tests.
