2 . Getting Started In Secondary Or Post Secondary Education

Most full time teaching positions require a four-year college degree and teaching certification. Getting the certification will vary by region and state. Different states have different requirements, and some states maintain very high standards. It is typically expected, and usually required, that students spend a lot of time teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher before graduating with a bachelor’s degree. This provides the aspiring teacher with the opportunity to get hands-on experience under the guidance of a certified and experienced teacher.

Keep in mind that to teach at a college or university having a teaching degree is not required. At the university level, it’s important that faculty members have outstanding credentials and extensive research in the fields they wish to teach. Most often a Ph.D. is also needed. While it’s possible to teach a few classes at a college or university, if you have a master’s degree, you’ll need a doctorate degree to become a tenured faculty member.

3 . Shortcut To Entering The Teaching Profession

If you have a four-year degree, but you do not have a teaching certification, there will still be some opportunities to get started in teaching because of the nationwide teacher shortage. These opportunities are usually limited to urban areas in critical school districts with poor teacher retention rates, or in rural areas that need secondary teachers in specific content areas such as chemistry and math. Check with your local area to determine requirements for substitute teachers. If you’re interested in a career change, it might be possible to begin working immediately as a substitute teacher while pursuing the required coursework at a nearby college or university. In some cases, you might need as little as four courses, depending on the coursework you completed while pursuing your undergraduate degree.

If you already have a four-year degree and want to get your teaching certification, then you could enroll in a certification program at a local college. This will require some student teaching under the supervision of a full time instructor. It may be difficult to arrange the classes part time at night. Most likely, you will have to enroll full time for six months to complete your certification.

Another way to begin a career as a teacher is to pursue teaching certification at the graduate level. Prospective teachers who already have bachelor degrees in other fields can pursue the coursework they need to become teachers at the graduate level. By doing so, they’ll end up getting the needed teaching certificate while earning an upper level degree at the same time. The only drawback is that some school districts are hesitant to hire a new teacher who has a master’s degree. The reason is that the teacher’s salary will be higher even though the teacher doesn’t have any teaching experience.

There are teaching shortages in certain states and regions within the U.S., and if you’re willing to relocate, it’s possible to get a full time teaching position fairly quickly. Relocation isn’t for everyone, and some teachers opt to substitute until an opening is available in the district where they live.

4 . Technology Teachers

Teaching technology-based courses is usually reserved for individuals that have a lot of technical savvy. Usually, the topic matter is some type of new technology with which your students are not familiar. Technology teachers in elementary or high schools are usually responsible for maintaining the school’s computer network. Technology teachers at business schools that offer a certificate or associate’s degree might only require the teacher to have a bachelor’s degree, although some will require the teacher to have a master’s degree.

There are several technology teaching jobs where the subject matter is more artistic than technology oriented. For example, professional web design, animation, and digital photography all require a certain level of artistic ability. These teaching jobs require a lot of industry experience compared to being an elementary or high school teacher. Therefore, in these cases, if you do not have a four-year degree, this may not be a problem if you have relevant industry experience.
