Techno Music

Here you will learn all about Techno Music and its birth.

1. Techno Music - Overview

There are many different types of music that are popular among the masses. One of the most popular types of music for people that go out and party is techno music. Techno music is a type of music that is made with electronic sounds and devices. In pure techno music, there are not vocalizations or sounds that are made by anything other than electronic devices. It started to become popular in certain music and social scenes after its creation, which is said to have taken place in the 1980’s outside of Detroit. Over the course of time the music has evolved, as all music genres do, but it has managed to hang on to the key elements that define the particular genre throughout the years. These key elements are the synthetic sounds that are created by the music producers that work on the tracks of the techno music discs.

Some very popular musicians have incorporated different aspects of techno music into their own music, and the results have been successful and well received for the most part. For example, Madonna’s “Ray of Light” incorporates a great deal of techno music aspects, and the song was a big hit among critics and individuals alike. People enjoyed being able to listen to music that was new and different, but which also had vocalized elements tied in that they could sing along with. There are other popular musicians and artists who use elements of techno music in their vocalized work, but the majority of techno artists that are listened to by techno music enthusiasts are pure in their element.

This particular style of music is typically either loved or hated by individuals. Many people have commented on the observation that there is no middle ground when it comes to techno music and the artists who create the music. Some people appreciate the beats and other people are turned off by the music. It is dependent upon the individual, as most types of music preference are. However, it is very rare that a person will appreciate an artist and not the genre. This is because the premise is mostly the same and a person has to have an appreciation for the fundamentals of the music before they can appreciate the individuals who create the music.

2. History

Three men outside of Detroit are credited with the creation of Techno music. They were known as “The Belleville Three” and were attending college at the time of their creation. The three friends from high school were Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Derrick May. They were inspired by a popular radio show during the time and went on to perform different works with electronic sounds as music. It started out as dance music; the men wanted to be able to promote a dance music that people could enjoy, and they wanted people to just get lost inside of the beats. The music tapes that were created by these men were circulated around and eventually they found their way to The Music Institute in downtown Detroit. Here, several investors began to take a deep interest in the music and the club helped to expand the nature of the music. Themes for the music began to take on more science fiction aspects. As the themes expanded and technology advanced, there were new and different sounds that could be explored by the producers of techno music beats. These advanced sounds have worked to help the genre evolve in general.

In 1988, the term techno began to be formally used to describe the genre of music that was created when synthesized music was created. When this genre was finally defined, it began to be used to label works of art that dated back as far as 1977. However, it is still the three men from Detroit who are given the credit of creating the music and designing it to be enjoyed by the masses. The genre was and still is pushed forward by different types of people from different races. However, most of mainstream America is not aware of the fact that many of the songs are promoted by black musicians. There are more similarities between the fundamentals of jazz and blues and techno music than many people are aware. The roots of these many different types of music are far more similar than many people would have initially anticipated.

3. Notable Artists

Like with every genre of music, there are a number of techno music artists who stand out as the elitists of their categories. Some of the most popular artists in the techno music genre include the originators of the music, credited to Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May and Juan Atkins. There was a second wave of producers of techno music and some of the most important artists from this time period, from 1988-1990 include John Acquaviva, Drexciya, Jeff Mills, Stacey Pullen, and Eon. These are some of the most popular techno artists, but there are many different artists that are liked. These are some of the more current techno producers and there are many from the past that are still used as well, since techno music is fairly timeless.

Eddie Fowlkes is an artist that many people argue could be one of the original creators of the genre as well. Still others argue that Robert Hood is an interpreter of the music, rather than one who created and defined the music. Nonetheless, these are two artists that are also important to the techno music scene. There are still other artists who are considered more mainstream that have worked to help promote techno music by incorporating aspects of it into their vocalized music. Some of these artists include Madonna and Moby. These are popular pop artists, but they have created songs with the help of their producers that take on the elements of techno music and introduce that style of music to the masses. It is important to notice these artists because of their ability to turn people toward the genre and show them something that they might not have otherwise known existed. As a result, they are included in the notable artists of the techno music genre because of their commitment to the style of music.

4. Scenes

There are many different places that utilize techno music as a form of environment enhancers. Many people commonly associate techno music with raves and ravers. Raves are musical and dancing events that take place at various areas all around the world. They are attended by primarily younger members, and they have been known to include drugs and loud, pulsating music. Techno music is a very popular choice for these scenarios because of the effect that it has on the body. It is a very intense music and when played loudly, the pulses can almost be felt. When mixed with drugs, this has a very unique effect on the body. However, not all attendants of the raves are into using drugs. There are many attendants that simply want to enjoy the music and atmosphere or the rave. Regardless, there are a number of different types of people that will go to raves in order to listen to the music that is played there and to learn more about the different types of techno music producers that create the music that they are listening to.

There are also a number of dance clubs and bars that feature techno music. For a while the music was seen as particularly trendy. In major metropolitan areas, clubs and bars would play techno music at night and crowds were very appreciative of the environment. While there are some people that are capable of enjoying this type of music while they are sitting around alone in their rooms, it seems to be more popular when listened to with others in a crowded area. More people seem to enjoy listening to the music with others than listening to it alone. It is a genre more indicative of a party scene than a solitary scene.

5. Development

Over time the music has developed a great deal. Synthesizers and computers were first used in part to make music in the late 1970’s and eventually they began to be used solely to create music as opposed to being used to accent different types of music. The evolution of techno music has taken place in stages. The early techno works included the men who initially created or thought to create the electronic music, The Belleville Three. It was seen as a highly mechanized and developed house music for a lot of dance clubs, bars and parties. As it became more popular, techno music began to get more advanced. This was also aided by different advances in technology that improved the different types of sounds that could be created by electronic devices.

Techno music also began to formulate subcategories. There is hardcore techno, which is a very fast type of music, and there also exists less well known styles of techno music known as ghettotech, breakcore, and digital hardcore techno music styling. These subcategories all use computers and electronic devices to compose the songs, but the specific styles can differ. Today’s techno music is in a lot of cases more vocal friendly. However, the genre is currently undergoing a bit of resurgence in its popularity and interest. The new center for techno music seems to be Berlin, Germany. It is a great center for new ideas and forms surrounding techno music and the accompanying scene. As the interest in techno music continues to grow, and as different advancements in technology create advancements in techno music, there are different places and areas that may work to incorporate techno music into their scenes. For example, there are now major motion pictures that will add techno music onto their soundtracks, either because the premise of the movie allows it or because there are other reasons to have the music in the film. This helps to add exposure to the genre again and exposes the music to people who might otherwise not have heard the music or gotten interested in it.

6. Geographic Locations

The initial center for techno music was Detroit. Three men from outside Detroit were the ones who initially started the techno music genre. As the music began to emerge as its own genre, it began to expand over the United States. It began to be played in different clubs and bars, especially in metropolitan areas. Many places choose to play techno music as their house music. It’s also played at raves and those types of scenes. Typically, raves take place outside of metropolitan areas, but not very far from highly populated areas. As the popularity of techno music declined, the center for the scene began to change. Slowly, the center of techno music moved from Detroit and other metro areas of the United States to Berlin, Germany. It is also very popular in many different areas of Europe and the United Kingdom. These are areas that have been able to advance the genre through the work of artists from the geographic locations over Europe and within the United Kingdom.

This new Mecca of techno music is more elusive than the previous geographic location of Detroit. Berlin is a center of techno music that incorporates more vocal-friendly melodies and tones. There is now more room for crossovers. In some ways this is good, because it can turn more people on to the genre of techno music. On the other hand, some techno music fans feel like this is undermining the innate philosophies of the music. Nonetheless, it is an important transition for the music genre; not only for the geographical location that has changed, but for the music that is produced as well. Different geographic locations work to create different elements in the music because there are different values that are important to different people. The evolution of the location of the techno music site coincides with the evolution of the techno music genre in general.

7. Musicology

Techno music is typically created in a formulated way. There are a lot of different types of sounds that are used, including synthetic sounds and effects created by computers. They have a regular beat, 4/4, and there are usually around 140 beats per minute in techno music. While there are certain examples of the genre that carry deep bass lines and strong melodies, these are not necessary components of the genre. Those characteristics are the ones that are common, but they are not necessary like some characteristics are of other music genres. This is a great style of music for many DJs to use in different party or club settings because of the energy that the music supplies. It is helpful because entire records can be played at once, and this helps with allowing DJs longer segues between sets. This is good for DJs because it allows them to be able to move about and talk to people when they need to, and it is also good for the guests because they get to keep dancing to a great beat.

Techno music musicians are typically referred to as producers of the music. The producer is able to take the entire electronic studio and turn that into one large and complex instrument. Typically, producers will try to find out what types of music will work to form a nice and danceable synthetic melody. This is generally created through a mixing board that the producer utilizes. All of the different sound capabilities of the studio are wired into the mixing board. This makes the creation process easier since the producer can sit in one place and access all the different types of noises.

8. Demographic

There are many different types of individuals that enjoy techno music. However, when the demographic of techno music listeners is analyzed, it can be seen that there are some qualities among people who listen to techno music that are more dominant as opposed to individuals who listen to other types of music. The countries that have more people listening to techno music are countries that have had a major hand in the development of the genre. These include the United States, Great Britain and Sweden. Techno music was first formed in the United States, in the city of Detroit. Great Britain and Sweden are countries that have helped to further develop the genre.

Typically, the people that appreciate techno music are also individuals that enjoy going out for fun. They are people who will enjoy going to bars and clubs in order to dance and have fun. These are the most likely scenarios for individuals in order to hear the music outside of specifically playing it inside their home to listen to techno music. It is also rare that techno music will be played on the radio. Techno music is heard by people who will be in a situation where a DJ will be playing music for guests to hear. Sometimes techno music can be enjoyed by those attending specific and formalized events, such as proms or weddings, but for the most part it is a style of music that will be most enjoyed at big clubs or bars with dance floors.

9. Offshoots

There are many different forms of music that have been created as offshoots of popular techno music. House music is the music that is played by a DJ and can therefore contain techno music. Trance music is also very popular, but trance music is typically not as intense as techno music. There are still about 130 beats per minute when it comes to trance music, but ambient trance music is even calmer. Trance music was created in the early 1990’s after the formidable start of techno music, and while many people appreciated the music it didn’t detract so much from the followers of techno music.

Offshoots from the techno music genre are also popular, and while they might sound similar, true fans of the genre can easily decipher one form from the other. There are subtle differences that make the music different from each other, but nonetheless appreciated by fans of the music. Some people feel like if you like one of the genres, you cannot like music of another genre as much. Techno music is unique because it appeals to people at certain times and has so many different related musical genres that people can listen to. The different offshoots help to show how intrinsic techno music is now in the music scene in general.
