Big campus life isn't all that it's cracked up to be anymore. Small colleges are gaining more appeal with students these days for several reasons. If you're stuck with the decision of whether to choose a big college or a small one, consider these benefits of small colleges.

STEP 1:

Students are offered more concentrated programs. Another big advantage of small or private colleges is that the school focuses on fewer subject areas. At a small college, you can take most or all of your courses with the same group of students, since the college only offers limited courses in a small subject area. This allows students to become more specialized graduates, resulting in more recognition from employers afterwards. Attend a small college and your focused program will likely teach you more than any broad program would.

STEP 2:

Problems are fewer. Since small colleges and private colleges have higher standards when it comes to behavior, you can expect to experience fewer problems when you attend one. You won't be bothered by misbehaving or delinquent classmates. Instead, you can focus on your education, along with every other student in the classroom, since you are all governed by and abiding by the strict codes of conduct at your small college.

STEP 3:

You'll be among like-minded peers. Since enrollment is so restricted at small colleges, usually only the best of the best are admitted. Students in a small college have the benefit of selective acceptance. This is great news for students who hope to maintain high averages. No longer will students have to worry about getting paired with the underachiever who's never in class. Every student in a small college has a good average that he or she works hard to maintain. You will be on the same intellectual playing field as your fellow students, so your teachers can teach more complicated concepts and know that the whole class will understand. You'll get a better education because you and your peers will be able to work at higher levels.

STEP 4:

Some small colleges have lower fees. There is a growing trend for small colleges to offer little in the way of frills in exchange for lower tuition prices. If you're not interested in the cafeteria, football field or dorm life, then a small college has its obvious benefits. You won't have to pay for the maintenance of the facilities on campus that you don't use. Smaller college have lower operating costs, and those savings are passed on to you, the student.
