Description:
The INTERNATIONAL DRAG KING COMMUNITY EXTRAVAGANZA (IDKE www.idkex.com) is the largest event of its type in North America and quite possibly the world. This exhibition is in honor of the IDKEX conference, a 3-day event, that will bring together an international collection of people interested in creating and celebrating the American and interantional drag king culture. IDKEX presents a unique opportunity for networking amongst various individuals interested in performing, watching, photographing, film making, creating art, studying, theorizing and writing about drag king performance. The event encompasses performances, academic and nonacademic workshops, presentations, panel discussions, film screenings and an art exhibition. The art exhibition will take place at the Frank Hale Jr. Black Cultural Arts Centre and will run from October 1 to October 31, 2008. An exhibition opening will take place from 2 - 4 pm on Friday October 17, 2008, during the IDKE event. For the past 10 years IDKE has provided a forum for the king community to gather and to explore inventive ways to embrace, understand and perform masculinity and to question gender norms. Beyond the realm of drag king stage performance, King community spaces have also historically been home to culture creators, academics, film and video makers, and artists. IDKEX provides an opportunity for different members of the king community, and the public, to come together, explore, intersect, interact and then branch off again in new directions. In keeping with this theme, we hope to bring together artists and artworks reflecting a variety of queer culture perspectives. The aim is to provide a testament to the creativity and resilience of our community, to question and provide critical dialogue and to showcase a variety of different artistic expressions within a gender conscious community. During the past nine years, IDKE boast of attendees from 35 US states, 7 Canadian Providences, Australia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Sweden and Taiwan to name a few.
