The United Parcel Service (UPS)

The United Parcel Service (UPS) delivers more than 15 million packages a day to about 6.1 million customers in 200 countries around the world, making it the world’s largest package delivery company. UPS is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and operates primarily in the United States with about 428,000 employees. It offers services globally including Fiji, Greece, Taiwan and Uruguay. UPS’ slogan “What can Brown do for you” emphasizes the company’s ability to provide services to almost any one in the world, at any address. The company can deliver letters and packages, large and small to every single address in the United States as well as millions more around the globe.

Before the $42 billion company grew into a worldwide name, it was started as a small messenger company in 1907 by two aspiring teenagers. Jim Casey and Claude Ryan started the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington with just $100. After a few years in the business, the messenger company merged with Merchants Parcel Delivery and owner Evert McCabe, then in 1919 the company adopted the name United Parcel Service. Starting delivery services strictly around Seattle, Washington then around Oakland, California before beginning in New York, it took close to 7 decades for the company to fully expand around the contiguous states of the US.

As of the fiscal year ending December 2006, UPS saw an increase of revenue totaling over $47 million and this success continues to expand. Today, UPS one of the most recognized brands in the world that is admired by all its customers. Being global leader of specialized transportation and logistics services, this company is still looking to increase the number of locations that it delivers to. Every day, UPS manages the flow of goods, funds, and information to millions of customers throughout the world.

With such a large area to cover, the company divides its business into three segments: US domestic package, international package, and supply chain & freight.

The US domestic package segment operations is devoted to delivering letters documents and packages throughout the 50 states of the US. Delivery is available to every address in the US and has a maximum package weight of 150 pounds and also provides domestic air delivery through the UPS Next Day Air Service. This segment of the company also offers customized package distribution solutions such as UPS CampusShip, Consignee Billing, Quantum View Manage, Delivery Confirmation and UPS returns. With standard ground delivery options, the company also offers same-day pickup of air and ground packages through UPS Hundredweight Service. UPS has over 4,200 store locations throughout the United States that gives customers full packaging and shipping services as well as offering other services like digital printing, sending or receiving faxes, laminating, binding and notary public, and the selling of office supplies and packaging materials. The convenience of these stores allows customers to easily send out letters and assorted packages with the help of dedicated UPS employees.

Within the US, UPS is also dedicated to making generous contributions as a way to give back to its committed communities. This past holiday season, The UPS store teamed up with the Toys for Tots Organization to launch the “60 Days of Giving” Campaign in which UPS sold $1 commemorative donations cards. The proceeds were used to supports Toys for Tots programs in the different communities where the funds were raised.

The international package operations include the delivery of individually labeled packages or pallets to customers across the 200 countries around the world. These operations include shipments outside the US, as well as shipments with either origin or distribution outside the US. The countries that UPS delivers globally to, just to name a few, include Antigua, Belize Cape Verde, Egypt, Haiti, Kuwait, Mongolia, the Philippines, the US Virgin Islands, and Western Samoa. The international package services segment categorizes its operations as import, export and domestic services.

As well as supporting and donating to domestic organizations, UPS is also a supporter internationally. UPS operates a warehouse facility in Panama’s Tocumen International Airport where the UN World Food Programme stocks vital supplies such as high-energy biscuits and other equipment that is essential for emergency response operations. When Hurricane Felix struck Peru and Bolivia in August 2007, this warehouse became extremely helpful in trying to provide aid in the aftermath of this hurricane’s destruction.

UPS Supply Chain Solutions comprises freight forwarding and logistics business. The transportation and freight services include air, ocean, rail and ground freight for all size shipments. UPS Freight transports a variety of products, from fabricated metal products to health care products, chemicals to textiles, and from furniture electronics and other general commodities, including consumer goods, industrial equipment and auto parts.
