Making sure you are getting a good contractor is difficult. Most people do not have to hire people or know what to look for in a contractor. There are a lot of construction scams and they are in the news all the time. So how do you get the best and not get scammed? Here are some tips to look for when choosing a contractor for your home. - Select several area contractors and contact them. Set up times for them to come out and evaluate your project. They will submit bids to you on the cost of the work involved and give you time estimates. While cost is a significant factor in making a contracting decision don't let it be your only method of choosing a contractor for your home. - Ask each contractor for a list of former customers that you can contact. Now be aware that they are probably not going to give you any names that they know will give you unfavorable reviews of their work. However, if their list of satisfied customers has numerous entries you can feel comfortable that a large portion of their clients are happy with their work. - Don't skimp. Make sure you actually take the time to contact the people on the lists to really find out how they felt. Many times a customer can be generally satisfied and give the company good feedback but when you talk to them personally they might bring up some points about the company you need to know. It doesn't necessarily mean you won't choose them but knowing what little things bugged other customers can give you a heads up of what to expect. - An even better way to find out the real feelings of former customers is to ask the contractor for a list of the last five clients they did work for rather than a list of references. That way you will not be getting a handpicked selection of clients they know will give them only a good review. - Ask friends. Word of mouth from friends can be a great way to find good contractors. Your friends are more apt to be open about how they feel about the companies that did work for them. - Check with the Better Business Bureau. While not everyone who is dissatisfied with a business makes a report if there are any you should take that as a serious mark against the company. - Make sure you get your final agreements in writing. Never accept a verbal bid or a handshake on a deal. This is business and you need to get all of your agreements in writing. Taking the time to choose a contractor wisely will ensure a pleasant project. Home improvements are tough enough; don't make it tougher by not doing your homework when picking a good contractor.
