Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses Eastern techniques such as acupuncture/acupressure, herbal practices and massage (Tunia and Shiatsu). Traditional Chinese medicine is holistic and looks at the whole body, mind and spirit. Holistic medicine believes that what affects the body affects the mind and what affects the spirit also affects the body. It believes in treating the cause of the illness, rather than just the symptoms. In comparison, Western medicine tends to look at the mind and body as separate and for the most part treats the symptoms of an illness, rather than the illness itself. Western medicine rarely takes the spirit into account, and does not try to heal it along with the body and mind as holistic medicine does.

If you're just now hearing about acupuncture/acupressure, Chinese herbs and massage, you may be wondering how to learn more about traditional Chinese medicine practices.

  1. Check out Qi: The Journal of Traditional Eastern Health and Fitness. This is a great website that takes you to articles about acupuncture/acupressure, massage, herbal remedies including ginseng, and an article about the energy in food rather than the caloric intake. On this website, you can find more information by shopping for herbs, and books about TCM.

  2. Go to Healthy World Online. This website takes you through a large group of articles including how Chinese medicine works, the history of Chinese medicine, listings of professional associations to help you find a practitioner, a bookstore full of books about Chinese medicine (mostly herbal), information about Chinese Medicine Schools and articles about specific diseases such as strokes, asthma and headaches that Chinese medicine can help with.
