Transparency Vision is a policy-based data monitoring platform that allows both business and technical users to create and manage policies pertaining to database usage to fulfill security, auditing, and performance needs. With its initial release, the Transparency Vision Server runs on Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms and supports the monitoring of Oracle 9.2+ DBs (also running on Windows, Linux, or Solaris). It is accessed through a browser-based interface (supporting authenticated access). The vendor states that additional platforms and databases will be added throughout the year.

A key feature of the product is its virtualization capability; the ability to automatically discover both the implicit and explicit transactions that occur between the DB and the applications. Using technology the vendor calls Service Recognition Technology (SeRT), the product automatically discovers and names the groups of related SQL statements that comprise an application transaction or data service. The resulting virtual "Transparency Business Actions" are used as the building blocks for the definition of data management policies that can then be monitored against those actions. According to the vendor, data management policies can then be developed "...by business people in business language," without requiring SQL or SQL-like statements and using everyday concepts and language.

Capabilities of the platform as touted by the vendor include:

- Auditing: Through the product's native ability to automatically discover the applications, transactions, and data services that access the DB and report this activity

- Security: Alerting is supported both in conjunction with specifically defined data management rules (as described above) and in regards to the detection of data access anomalies that differ from baseline activities. New applications or users can trigger alerts as can existing users or applications that operate outside the baseline

- Performance: Through the setting of threshold-based alerts and the analysis of Business Action service levels and trends. Additional drill-down capabilities and reports on performance violations are also available

Transparency Vision is currently in beta and is expected to be generally available at the end of July. Pricing starts at $24,995.
