Back in 1968, eleven women met in the “Serenity Room” of the Triangle Club on 4th Street in West Palm Beach. They emptied their pockets, and with $23 founded Gratitude House which was then known as the Gratitude Guild. The women, whose husbands called them the “Silk Stocking Group” because they wore hats, gloves and pearls, were determined to find a place where they could offer homeless, needy, alcoholic women a place to live providing housing, meals and rehabilitation. Back then, jail was the only option for women with no resources.

Over the years, Gratitude House has adapted to the needs of the community. In 1989, a special innovative program was started for pregnant and postpartum women, and then in 1990 a partnership was developed with The Children’s Place to provide housing for children whose mothers were undergoing treatment. Two years later a Day Treatment Program began, and day care was arranged for clients with children. In 1996, Gratitude House was aware of the unique difficulties involved with HIV chemically dependent women and through a Federal grant administered by the City of West Palm Beach, Hibiscus Haven was opened as a safe residence for eight qualifying women.

In 2003 The Paul C. Nagel Administration Building was opened, giving Gratitude House the additional room needed to begin a Day/Night Treatment Program, and prepare for a much-needed program that would allow a pregnant woman treatment while allowing her to keep her newborn with her at Gratitude House. In 2005, Gratitude House became one of only six facilities in the country to introduce its exciting new MITT Program (Mothers and Infants in Treatment Together).

Along the way, we integrated co-occurring issues, Case Management services and vocational counseling into our treatment programs. From its humble beginnings as an all-volunteer operation -- clipping coupons, delivering meals and renting a small house on Hibiscus Street--Gratitude House has grown with the times and needs of the community.

Today, Gratitude House is a fully accredited Level II licensed treatment center for women age 18 years and older, that helps women successfully battle the disease of addiction and co-occurring issues. We continue to practice innovative treatment modalities aimed at aiding both the individual clients and the greater community in which they reside. Through the provision of professional clinical therapy in a nurturing and safe environment, it is our goal at Gratitude House to help rehabilitate women caught in the seemingly hopeless cycle of drug and alcohol addiction. We are committed to helping these women to achieve sustained wellness and sobriety in order to function in the community as self-sufficient, healthy and productive citizens.

Pride in a Unique Program
Beach Comber Rehab

Joseph Bryan has been named Executive Director of The Beachcomber. He follows in the path of his father, James Bryan, who founded the facility in Florida in 1976 and whose career spanned decades of leadership in the field of alcoholism treatment and addiction treatment. James died on December 1, 2005.

Jim had begun changes at The Beachcomber as plans for retirement dawned. It was then his son, Joe, expressed interest in management. He had worked at the facility since 1980 then in 1987, with a degree in business administration from Florida Atlantic University, Joe was ready for the health care career that has followed.

First as marketing director and community spokesman for The Beachcomber, Joe learned the importance of a “homelike atmosphere.” He noted how residents responded positively to the program and felt ready to share his knowledge with a broad range of referral agencies.

By 1992 Joe had advanced to program director with Jim Bryan available for consultation. Changes were smooth and orderly so as Executive Director Joe’s transition is now complete. The Beachcomber’s experienced staff faces the future with confidence in a program developed over a thirty year span.

Since its opening the program has been keyed to treatment in an intimate, homelike environment. In the words of the founder, Jim Bryan, “it’s a residential program where hope and fulfillment begin to replace fear, anger and loneliness.”

Keyed to the principals of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, a combination of factors makes the residential experience unique for those seeking treatment in the appealing, tropical setting.

Specializing in Women

The Orchid was founded to meet the needs of women that were not being addressed by the recovery community. The Orchid holds the belief that substance abuse in women has a cause, a progress and a societal perception different than that of men. Specifically women addicts are more likely to have poor self concepts of guilt and blame, and mental health problems than male addicts. Furthermore, they are more likely than men to let social stigma, labeling and guilt prevent them from seeking help.

The Orchid Model of recovery was created to address these differences. It provides a different experience due to its embrace of the relational growth model first espoused by Dr. Karen Dodge, its focus on trauma and its dedication to a holistic approach to recovery. The relational growth modelposesthat recovery in women is more likely to be successful when a woman is a part of a trusting, interdependent network of other women. To help women create this network, the relational growth model guides and encourages women to live, work, play and communicate with one another during the recovery process.

The Orchid Model of treatment identifies that the impact of untreated trauma on women in early recovery can be devastating. This trauma often leads to unhealthy choices, a continuing inability to function without chemicals and chronic relapse. This trauma can be significant or persistent physical, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse in either the past or present that affects a woman’s self-esteem, emotional well-being or ability to cope. The Orchid Model’s commitment to a holistic healing informs The Orchid’s embrace of a wide variety of treatment modalities. Cognitive behavioral therapy techniques are used in conjunction with other drug treatment modalities more conducive to coaxing expression and resolution in women with issues of trust and articulation of pain. Healing art therapy, dynamic group work, psychodrama treatment, family sculpting and twelve step recovery, are alltools used for women to receive maximum therapeutic benefits, throughout their treatment experience.
