Dog owners deem it quite difficult to choose a dog collar. It may seem nonessential for some, but most experts believe it important, as it often grows with the dog. Therefore, it is equally important that your dog has the a comfortable dog collar.

The most obvious purpose a dog collar may serve is to keep the dog in control, preventing him from wandering off. Dog collars are often used in combination with a dog leash. This way, you will have a level of controllability over your dog. Additionally, it may serve best in puppy or dog training as it provides better hold on the dog, giving you an opportunity to direct him into following your commands. Also, it holds of dog's identity tag in case your pet gets lost.

Listed below are the compiled guidelines for choosing your dog's collar:

· Choose the appropriate size that will fit your dog's neck. A small dog collar may chock your dog; meanwhile, a too big dog collar may let your dog roam free. Both will be uncomfortable for you and your dog. Also, take note of the material used and the width of the collar; ensure that it will suit your dog breed and size.
· A rule of thumb in choosing your dog collar is that you can fit two fingers between the dog's neck and the dog's collar. Moreover, assure that it can rotate easily around the throat so as not to result in breathing problems. Also, ensure that the dog collar will not pull your dog's ears.

There is a wide range of dog collars, some of which will be discussed in this article.

The standard dog collar mostly comes in nylon forms. This type of collar is durable and does not cost much.

On the other hand, the dog training collar is most often used in dog training as it provides a better grip and allows varying levels of manageability. The type of training will distinguish the type of collar needed.

Dog obedience training normally employs the use of choke chain or choke collar. The principle in this dog collar is that it will tighten if too much pull is exerted from the leash, but will loosen if the dog stops pulling. However, this form of collar is not advisable for use, except under special circumstances, like rigorous expert training. Nonetheless, it is not recommended that you leave your dog by himself with this collar, as he may easily choke.

Dog shock collars, or electric dog collars, are used to discourage a specific dog behavior; for example, unnecessary barking. This works once the bark sensor identifies the dog's barks. This then sends a signal to the pair of electrodes attached on the dog collar to administer harmless shocks to the dog. The problem with this device is that it continually punishes the dog for misbehavior, which at any rate may have some effects on the over-all psyche of the dog.

There are similar devices, like a shock collar, which produces a much louder sound than the dog's bark to discourage him from barking, or another version which emits citronella that distracts your pets barking. Another related device is the pinching collar. As its name suggests, it works by pinching the dog if it pulls too hard.

Initially, these devices may serve quite well, but should not be considered for long-term use.
