How often do you come close to hitting the writing heights you’re truly capable of? How regularly do you read back some of your creative writing and think, “Wow, that’s one of the best things I’ve written....I’m really proud of this piece of writing”?

My guess is that it’s not nearly as often as you’d like, if it ever happens at all.

Woody Allen famously said, “80% of success is just showing up.” And this is true with creating, more than anything.

So here’s your 5-step plan for showing up and giving yourself a chance to unlock that amazing creative writing potential that deep down you know is within you:

  1. Choose a time each day to write. Make it the same time each day. You know yourself when you’re most creative, and when you find it easiest to write. For some, it’s first thing in the morning; for others, it’s late at night. Find your best time, then stick to it every day.
  2. Have a ready supply of writing ideas. The best way to do this is to use a writing journal. This is simply a notebook you carry with you at all times and note down your ideas as they come to you. Then when you go to write, you have pages of potential great ideas to develop. A writing journal, more than anything else, is the writer’s secret weapon and his greatest friend.
  3. Make your writing space comfortable. Is where you write now somewhere you find it easy to write? Is it free from distraction and do you have everything you need close by? Is where you write inviting and somewhere you enjoy going to write, or cluttered and unappealing? Are your chair and desk comfortable? Pay attention to the small details that can make your writing experience flow as freely as possible....
