The prevention methods recommended include:

- Compression stockings. These stockings are the key to prevention of varicose veins and spider veins. One must wear them regularly. Today, stockings are available in various designs and styles for comfortable wear. The stockings must be worn first thing in the morning and may be taken off at night. Unfortunately stockings must be worn forever. However, besides preventing varicose veins, they also reduce the chance of developing blood clots in the legs.

- When resting, try and keep the legs elevated. This will help the blood move away from the leg to the heart

- Do not stand or sit in one place for prolonged periods. Move around. There is no other substitute for walking. Walk around every now and then, it will help the muscles remain active and squeeze the blood out of the legs.

- During your pregnancy (esp. in the 2nd and 3rd term), try and lie down on the left side. This takes away pressure on the veins in the pelvis and prevent the development of varicose veins and leg swelling

- Do not cross your legs when sitting down.

- Exercise and walk. It is not only good for your legs but good for better health

- Try and maintain a normal weight. Obesity increases the chance of increasing varicose veins.
