Verizon Wireless is one of the leading cell phone providers in the United States today. It offers a wide range of cell phones, cell phone plans and features as well as broadband network access. From features ranging from “Get it Now” to “Mobile Web” to Text, Picture and Video messaging, Verizon Wireless has grown to be a top choice among potential customers as well as becoming very tough among its close competitors. “Get it Now” allows a customer to browse through hundreds of games, wallpapers, and music choices and download them directly onto their phone. Also within “Get It Now” is V CAST, Verizon Wireless' high-speed audio, video, and entertainment delivery system. The company’s “Mobile Web” service allows customers to access the internet, e-mail, and personal information management tools, such as calendars and address books, through the handset based menus. Verizon Wireless currently offers the "Nationwide Plan with OnStar," which is a bundle plan between Verizon Wireless service and OnStar service. With this plan, the Verizon Wireless phone is the "primary line" and the OnStar device is the "secondary line."
The voice services business includes the “America’s Choice” plans, which offer a choice in amounts of bundles minutes; family/small group and shared minute plans designed for multiple user households and small businesses; and plans targeted to business accounts. The company’s text and picture messaging service offers two way Short Messaging Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging (MMS).
Basic individual plans start at $59.99 and increase as these features are added. Furthermore, Verizon Wireless also offers family cell phone plans to those who are interested in sharing lines with their immediate kin. Verizon continuously introduces new product lines of cell phones and PDAs as a way to gain new customers. For example, with the success of the enV phone by LG, Verizon Wireless decided launch an improved version of the phone and most recently, in November 2007, it introduced the Voyager by LG which allows customers to enjoy a front display that is touch screen and the phone then flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. As a result of its continuous success, Verizon Wireless was able to bring in total revenue of over $38 million during the fiscal year that ended December 2006, which was an increase of 17.8% from 2005. These numbers put Verizon Wireless at the top of the market when it comes to sales and revenue.
The national access business includes high speed applications, such as email, enterprise applications, image downloads and full browsing capabilities for laptop computer users.
Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone, was founded in 2000 following the combination of the domestic US operations of Bell Atlantic Mobile, Air Touch Communications and PrimeCo Communications. The Merger of these operations was complemented by the addition of GTE’s domestic US wireless properties as a part of the Bell Atlantic/GTE merger that lef to the formation of Verizon Communications.
The company made a number of acquisitions in 2001. Verizon Wireless completed the acquisition of 20 PCS licenses in six US states from Alltel. It also acquired the wireless operations of Dobson Communications Corporation in California, Georgia, Ohio and Tennessee. The company also acquired Price Communications Wireless. In the same year, the company entered into an agreement to acquire 75% ownership interest in Dobson Communications Corporation’s wireless system operations in Arizona.
Advertising has always been one of Verizon Wireless’ strong points. With catchy phrases and memorable commercials, this company has succeeded in targeting the right markets and turning them into sales.
In its early years Verizon Wireless advertised the fact that they were the largest cellular network in the country. With customers gesturing with two fingers, much like the World War II-era "V for Victory" sign, to show that the person was on the Verizon network. The slogan for Verizon Wireless at that time was "Join in" which was used in their marketing scheme to promote "iN-calling", "iN-messaging," and even the toll-free number "1-800-2-JOIN-IN".
Later, Verizon adopted the slogan "We never stop working for you," with commercials depicting a Verizon employee, “test man”, roaming about in strange places continuously asking, "Can you hear me now? Good." In 2005, Verizon Wireless added an "army" of network engineers into their commercials in conjunction with the "test man." The "test man" no longer says the catchy phrase as previously mentioned. Instead, they have adopted a new slogan "It's the Network." to emphasize their network quality. “Can you head me now? Good” will still be used as Verizon Wireless debuts new commercials in late 2007, early 2008.
Verizon Wireless’ top competitors in the US market include: Cingular / AT&T, Sprint together with Nextel and T-Mobile. With the increasing interest in the newly introduced iPhone, Verizon has recently been struggling to keep its customers from switching over to the rival company.
