Verona

Verona is the beautiful, provincial capital of Veneto, which is located in Northern Italy. Verona is set out in a loop, with the center of the modern city (which also happens to be the center of the ancient town) located on the Adige River. Verona experienced regular floods from this river until 1956, when the Mori-Torbole Tunnel was created. The tunnel takes run-off from the river into nearby Lake Garda, which reduces the risk of flooding to Verona. Before the tunnel, the city would flood once every 70 years; now, the city will probably only flood once every 200 years. The tunnel was an important step for Verona, because it allows the city to conduct business, commerce, and cultural events without the problem of floods.

1. History Of Verona

Napoleon occupied Verona until 1797, when the people rebelled on Easter Monday to drive out the French. At that time, Napoleon called an end to what had been known as the Venetian Republic. With the signing of the Treaty of Campo Formio in October of 1797, Verona came under Austrian rule. Subsequently, the city was taken into Italian rule in 1805, returned to Austrian rule in 1814, and finally to Italy in 1866, where it has remained ever since.

However, even though the city has remained under the control of one country thus far, it has not been free of problems. Fascism in 1938 caused a dark wave of anti-Semitic propaganda, which destroyed much of the Jewish population, as well as created problems with the entire city. This was a time in which there was great turmoil in all of Europe, with many people disappearing, many citizens tortured and killed, and many lives destroyed. This dark period in Europe was also a dark period for Verona, as the city was used to house troops and torture Jewish people and their supporters. Unfortunately, Verona saw more of the Fascist regime than much of Italy did. Some claim that this has helped make Verona into the city it is today - which is a very accepting and open city. Residents claim that the downfall of Fascism helped to mold the city into a place where everyone is now accepted.

Travelers to Verona will be able to notice this acceptance as soon as they arrive. Verona is one of the most accommodating and welcoming cities in which to conduct business or pleasure travel in all of Europe. Therefore, it has become a quite popular destination for business and pleasure travelers alike.
