VoIP Performance Testing
Author: ajaxVoice and data convergence over the same transmission medium is one of the greatest technological advancements in the digital arena. VoIP, as it is commonly called, can provide greater operational efficiency and give that extra competitive edge for an organization.
Many organizations have now implemented VoIP systems that help them to connect to remote locations with ease. The data network is usually burdened with new applications and servers and when VoIP is transferred over the same network, problems due to convergence occurs, resulting in severe network blocks. As long as traffic is kept at the minimum level, networks provide the best of speed and accuracy. However, most networks fail to take on the load when convergence occurs in the network. As a result, daily operations of business groups, that are dependent on VoIP systems, are stagnated.
The VoIP network testing is a vital part of the overall network implementation effort by an organization. When this phase is overlooked, the organization faces loss due to high investments made in equipment and network infrastructure building. In addition, the organization experiences reduced productivity as operations gets delayed regularly.
The only way to mitigate these challenges is through performance testing of the VoIP network. This is usually done in four phase – assessment, planning, impact analysis and audits.
Assessment – The network’s baseline performance is evaluated to understand its transfer capacity. Also, latent issues already present in the network needs to be addressed; to prevent possible threats during VoIP transfer
Planning – A well-defined process for network performance testing needs to be chalked out, keeping in mind all factors that contribute to network blocks
Impact analysis – A test plan is made to study the impact of varying amounts of network traffic and to understand the break-even point for the network.
Regular Audits –As most networks cater to millions of users across the globe, network audit is imperative to keep the current network traffic up and going. Network blocks are capable of bringing down revenue generated out of digital fund transfers and hence need to be audited in a phased manner.
Providing reliable network systems to high-end users is a priority task for any organization; and successful VoIP transmissions can go a long way in increasing business revenue. Therefore, these steps need to be religiously followed to ensure constant network speed and performance.
