"Simplify, simplify," Thoreau once wrote, although he’d be surprised that these 160-year-old words could double as ad copy for all-in-one VoIP products.

A bit of explanation: VoIP offers the prospect of reduced costs for businesses that run all their telecommunications—phone, e-mail, fax, and printers—using the Internet Protocol (IP), rather than traditional phone or other transmission protocols. This signaling unity enables businesses to eliminate costly surplus phone lines and other equipment as well as duck long-distance tolls, since calls can be carried over the Internet rather than through, say, AT&T’s long-distance lines. In addition, upgrades to a VoIP-based communications system can be software- rather than hardware-based.
