Wallpaper Installation Removal

Wallpaper installation and removal can be a tricky process. Learn now to do it right and when it is better to hire a professional for the process.

1. Benefits of Wallpaper

There are several benefits to using wallpaper over simply painting a wall in your home. The most obvious benefit of using wallpaper is the variety of decorating options you have. You can choose from hundreds of patterns, colors, and designs when choosing wallpaper. Some wallpapers can be painted, allowing you to put some texture in the room while still adding your favorite paint color. You can even vary the way the wallpaper is placed in the room. Some rooms look great with a wallpaper border in the room, while others look best with a full wallpapering. Some homeowners choose to put wallpaper on half of their walls with a border at the chair-rail length, thus giving them another way to decorate with wallpaper.

Wallpaper is easy to clean. Most of today’s wallpapers are coated so that they wipe clean from common household marks. This makes them more durable than some paints, which fade over repeated scrubbings. For rooms where the walls are prone to get dirty, wallpaper is a good option. Besides being easy to clean, the patterns on the paper will help hide dirt and smudges. Finally, wallpaper hides blemishes in the wall’s plaster far better than a coat of paint. However, even though there are many benefits to wallpaper, you may find that your new home has wallpaper that you do not like. For this reason many people want to learn all they can about wallpaper installation and removal. Proper removal is the key to being able to successfully cover areas where the old wallpaper once was.

2. Removing Old Wallpaper

Wallpaper removal can be quite tricky. You really will not know how difficult the process will be until you start. Some wallpapers are hung with stronger adhesives than others. The stronger the adhesive, the more difficult it will be to remove wallpaper from the room. Also, the amount of wallpaper on the wall will determine how difficult of a time you will have when you try to remove wallpaper from a room in your home. Believe it or not, the previous owners may have put up layer after layer of wallpaper, without removing the previous layers. It is crucial to remove all of these layers before installing wallpaper again.

The first step is to clear the room of any furniture, or cover it with drop cloths. Then, try to see if you can peel off the wallpaper on your own. Some wallpaper adhesives are designed to simply peel away from the wall. If you cannot peel it with your hands, try using a small putty knife. Be cautious about the amount of pressure you use as you do not want to damage the plaster in the wall behind the wallpaper.

If you cannot peel the wallpaper, you need to score it. You can use a razor blade or knife to do this, or you can purchase a wallpaper-scoring tool from your local hardware store. However, use caution not to score the plaster under the wallpaper.

Once you have scored the paper, apply water or a wallpaper removal to the wall. The paper will absorb this liquid, and then you will reapply it. Repeat this process until the paper begins to loosen from the wall. You could also use a wallpaper steamer to remove wallpaper. Then you should be able to remove the paper and most of the adhesive. Now that the wallpaper removal is complete, it is time to shop for your wallpapering supplies.

3. Gathering Your Supplies

Once you have you removed the old wallpaper completely, you need to gather the tools you will need to wallpaper the room again. The first supply is, of course, your wallpaper. The pattern and color of your wallpaper will be largely a matter of choice. Buying the correct amount of wallpaper is important. While you do not want to run out before your project is complete, you also do not want to have too much left over when you are done.

You can figure the amount of wallpaper by carefully measuring the square footage of the area you are covering. Square footage can be calculated by multiplying the length and width of each plane on your walls. Be sure to subtract the windows, closets, and doors from this amount. Purchase an amount of wallpaper that gives you a little extra to work with. Besides the right amount of wallpaper, you will also need a paint tray to hold water or adhesive, paint rollers, seam roller, a paint brush for smoothing the wallpaper, a putty knife, spackle, primer, wallpaper sizing, sandpaper, a mixing bucket, and a stepstool or stepladder before you start your wallpaper installation project.

4. Self Adhesive Wallpaper Vs. Paste

Many of the wallpaper options you will consider when installing wallpaper in your home are self-adhesive wallpapers. Self-adhesive wallpaper is easy to install, because you will not have to mix any paste in order to apply the wallpaper effectively. Some self-adhesive wallpapers work like contact paper. They have a backing that you remove when you are ready to apply the paper. Other self-adhesive wallpapers, known as pre-pasted papers, are backed by an adhesive that is activated by warm water. To use these pre-pasted wallpapers you will soak the paper in warm water and then place it on the wall.

The other option, and the more traditional option, is to use a wallpaper paste for your wallpaper installation. While self-adhesive wallpapers are easier in many ways, some wallpaper installation professionals choose to only use pasted wallpapers because they feel that they are far more durable. Keep in mind that applying wallpaper with paste is quite messy. However, some less expensive self-adhesive wallpapers will still require paste because they do not stick well, particularly to textured surfaces. Pasted wallpaper tends to stick better to textured surfaces than self-adhesive wallpaper.

5. Preparing the Wall

If you want to learn how to wallpaper, you must first learn how to prepare your wall for the paper. Preparing a wall before you wallpaper is one of the most important steps to wallpaper installation. Preparing a wall is particularly important if you have had to remove wallpaper before you begin installing your new paper. Start by sanding the wall carefully to remove any paste or adhesive residues that were not removed with the wallpaper.

If the walls were painted, then you will want to check them for any rough areas, which should be sanded. Preparing a wall for wallpaper installation means making it as smooth as possible. If you see any cracks or large holes in the wall, cover them with spackling. Let the spackling dry and then sand it so that it is smooth. Cover it with a primer before you put up any paper. If you are applying wallpaper to a wall that has never been painted, make sure you at least put a primer on the drywall or plaster. This seals it and protects it from the adhesive.

The next step in preparing a wall for wallpaper is to apply sizing to the walls. Sizing will create the best surface on the wall for wallpaper installation. Sizing is necessary on all walls except those that have been recently primed. Finally, you will need to mark your starting place. Draw a line using a level that marks this starting place, so that you can hang your first piece straight. You may want to duplicate this line for each piece of wallpaper you place on the wall, particularly if you are new to learning how to wallpaper.

6. Preparing the Paper

Once you are ready to begin wallpaper installation, carefully measure the room from floor to ceiling in several places. You need to measure several locations because your home probably is not level. Find the highest area in the room, and cut a length of wallpaper that is around six inches higher than the highest point. Hanging your wallpaper works best if you cut each piece ahead of time. You can number the pieces at the top of the paper so that you know where they go in the room. However, if you have a complicated pattern that you need to match, you should cut the paper as you go.

Choose the piece you are going to use first and get it ready. If you are using self-adhesive paper with a backing, simply remove the backing to prepare the paper. If the paper is pre-pasted, then you need to activate the glue by running it through warm water in your paint tray. Start with the end of the roll of paper, and then gradually unroll it into the water. Then let it drip for a few seconds before taking it to the table. You will want to fold the wallpaper over on itself so that the glued sides are touching. Without creasing the paper, fold the new ends to the center to allow the maximum amount of glue to touch. This procedure is known as booking the paper, and is an important part of wallpaper installation.

Paper that needs to be pasted in place must have glue applied to its back. You can either do this on a long table or on the floor. You will apply the glue evenly using a paint roller. Again, you will need to book the paper as described for pre-pasted paper.

7. Applying the Wallpaper

Once you have prepared the wall and the paper, the real wallpaper installation begins. The first piece is the most important, and should be placed ceiling to floor. Keep the paper folded as you place the first edge by the ceiling. Carefully line up the paper with the vertical line you drew, centering the paper carefully. Leave three inches of paper at the top by the ceiling, and, if you are using a corner to being the project, around one inch on the wall adjacent to your starting point. Once it is straight, unfold the rest of the paper and smooth it on the wall using a brush or knife. Carefully force any air bubbles out of the paper, and wipe the outside of the wallpaper to remove any excess adhesive. You will use a sponge to remove the adhesive, but make sure that you rinse this sponge carefully. Then use your putty knife to remove the excess at the top of the wall.

Carefully press the edge of the wallpaper down using a seam roller. Then repeat the process for the rest of your pieces. Allow paper to hang over the openings in the room, such as windows and doors, and then uncover them by removing the paper with the putty knife. Throughout the wallpaper installation process, make sure you are lining up the pattern on the paper carefully.

8. Finishing Touches

Once your room is completely covered in beautiful wallpaper, relax for a minute. You are done with the basics of wallpaper installation. Now it is time to do the finishing touches. If you notice any wrinkles in the corners of your room, make a small cut where the wrinkle is and press the wrinkle out of the paper. Check all seams and corners for any curling. A seam roller can help with this curling. You may need to apply a tiny bit of glue to keep these seams down. Finally, carefully inspect the room to make sure you have cleaned off all of the adhesive. If you have, then you are done installing wallpaper!

9. When to Use a Professional

If you still feel as though you have no idea how to wallpaper, you may want to consider using a professional. Wallpaper installation is a complicated procedure, and can become quite messy. Using a professional wallpaper installer can make the process go as smoothly as possible. To save money, you can remove wallpaper that is already in the room before you bring in the wallpaper installation professional. The benefit of using one of these professional installers is that they have experience hanging wallpaper. The steps of the process that seem nearly impossible and extremely tedious to you will be no problem to them. You will also be gaining the benefit of many years of experience in wallpapering, which is a huge benefit if you are new to wallpaper installation. However, if you feel that you can handle the wallpaper installation on your own, then have fun and get started. Your walls are waiting!
