Decorating the interior walls with wallpaper was preferably used by home owners during the time that it was on style. However, in this era where a lot of new techniques and modern ways are now available to decorate the home, wallpaper has lost its grip to interior wall decoration. Experts and owners of homes agree that when wallpaper has become faded and outdated as a result of long exposure to elements, they start to peel off and become a nuisance to the interior design rather than being decorative. Therefore, there is no other recourse but to consider wallpaper removal. However, it’s not that easy to remove the material as it may cause serious damage to the walls.

Most frequently, you encounter the problem of removing the glue which is strongly adhered to the wallpaper. This happens because only a thin coating of primer was applied to the wall before installing the wallpaper. This causes the top layer of the board, which is made of paper, to absorb the glue. When this occurs, these top layers will come out easily together with the wallpaper and damage your walls. If this problem is encountered, it is better to call a wallpaper removal expert.

The following are types of wallpaper:

  • Some of the wallpapers are dry, strip-able, solid vinyl and fabric-backed papers that can be pulled out easily without the use of water.

  • Most of the wallpapers installed in homes are vinyl-coated. The top layer of this type can be removed leaving the paper backing intact on the wall.

    Steps in Wallpaper Removal

  • Gather the tools needed like wallpaper peeling tool, warm water, vinegar, spray bottle, knife, sponge and bucket.

  • Put off electrical connections and spray the solution to the wall or by the use of a paint roller.

  • Use a sponge to apply vinegar onto the wall. This vinegar solution will be absorbed and will make the glue soft to scrape.

  • Scrape the top layer of the vinyl many times as possible by the use of a knife or a scraper.

  • When the top layer is scraped off, start removing the wallpaper backing by wetting it. Spray complicated areas with more water as necessary.

  • Do this procedure again until you have removed all the remaining wallpaper and glue from the surface of the wall.

  • When all the backing is gone, finalize cleaning the walls with a sponge, fabric softener and warm water.

When the wallpaper removal has been completed, inspect the entire area for any possible damage. If there is any, have it repaired first before you start painting or texturing. It may appear to you as an easy job to scrape off the wallpaper and cleaning the walls thoroughly before painting, but once you have started the job and make progress, you will soon realize the intricacies of wallpaper removal. When you have discovered this and you think you cannot do it yourself, it’s time to consult a wallpaper removal company rather than incur severe damages in your walls.
