Your delicate or antique glassware does not belong in the dishwasher. Don't risk chipping or breaking these fine pieces by tossing them into the machine or the sink for cleaning. Instead, follow these instructions so you can gently care for and wash delicate antique glassware.

  1. Select a mild detergent. Don't use bleach or strong abrasive detergents as they may etch or stain the fine glass you are trying to protect. Choose a detergent that is mild and use only a small amount.
  2. Gather the materials. You will need a two plastic dishpans, warm water, a soft washcloth and a soft towel. Gather your antique glass on the kitchen counter. When gathering the glass, be careful to hold with two hands and don't let the pieces hit each other. You wouldn't want to shatter a piece because it clinked too close to something else.
  3. Fill the first dishpan with warm water and detergent. Add a small amount of dish detergent to the plastic pan and then add warm water to the dishpan.
  4. Fill the second dishpan with clean, warm water. This dishpan will be used for rinsing the glassware once it is cleaned.
  5. Clean the glassware. Slowly dip one piece of glassware into the dishpan. Use the soft washcloth to wipe all the surfaces of the glass. If necessary, soak the glassware in the soapy water for a few minutes to remove that excess layer of dust or oils.
  6. Once the glassware is clean, place into the second dishpan to rinse. Roll the glassware in the dishpan making sure not to press too hard. Slowly rinse the soap as you roll the glass through the clean water.
  7. Dry with a soft towel. Once the glass is clean, slowly dry with a soft towel and put away the glassware. Remember to wash, rinse and dry each piece separately then put them away so they are separated and cannot crash together or scrape against each other.

Antique glassware often looks sturdier than it is. Such glass is often delicate and needs to be protected by careful cleaning and care. Follow these steps to wash delicate antique glassware and preserve it for years to come.
