When promoting a Web site, everybody needs a little bit of help. From search engine optimization to web directories, there are millions of ways to promote your site on the web. You just need to know which methods pack the most punch.

STEP 2:

Submit your site to the best web directories. If you want to be featured in a web directory, you can wait until someone at an administrative level stumbles across your site. Or you can take matters into your own hands and submit your site to the web directory.

However, because submitting to web directories takes time and energy, it's important to make sure that you're submitting to the best web directories on the Internet. Not all web directories are created equal. There are literally hundreds—and perhaps even thousands—of web directories on the Internet. By this time tomorrow there will be even more. If web directories are to serve as a valuable web marketing tool, it's a good idea to learn how to find good web directories to submit to.

STEP 3:

Find web directories with good management. The owner should be actively promoting and managing the web directory. You don't want to waste time with a web directory that's been abandoned by the owner.

You also want a web directory that's being updated regularly and actively searched by web crawlers. When you pull up a certain web directory, take a look at the cache date. If it's years or even months in the past, don't bother with that directory.

STEP 4:

Determine how much you want to spend. There are tons of free web directories out there. However, as with many things, you get what you pay for. Some free web directories are great because they offer a valuable service at no cost to you. But in general, a paid web directory is a safer time investment. Look for web directories that offer a permanent link to your site for a onetime fee, rather than a monthly subscription.

It's also important to find directories that post direct links to your site. Directories that filter traffic through other domains or redirect visitors are no good to you. When visitors click on your link, they should go straight to your site.

The best thing about web directories is that you can submit to as many as you like. You're limited only by your individual time and resources. However, the more you submit to, the more traffic you're likely to see.

STEP 5:

Try different directories. There are several good web directories that I've discovered over the years. All of them provide a high quality link to your site as well as direct traffic. The list includes familiar names such as the Yahoo directory, Business.com, and Best of the Web. Yahoo and Business.com each charge around $300 per year to be listed, whereas Best of the Web charges $200 one time. There are also cheaper directories to list your Web site with that provide high quality links to your site. Directories such as GoGuides, maxlinks, JoeAnt, and RankDir all should be included as part of your marketing plan.

In general, web directories are a fantastic resource for building traffic to your Web site. Just make sure that you're working with quality sources to ensure that you receive the greatest results.
